African and European Cocoa Producers on Fernando Póo, 1880s to 1910s
The decline of the Creole or Fernandino planters of Fernando Póo came later and was less severe than has sometimes been said, while the indigenous Bubi inhabitants played a far greater role in the development of the cocoa economy than has usually been acknowledged. Social discrimination against Creoles and Bubi was of little significance. The re-direction of Fernandian exports to Spain from the 1890s had no negative effect on African producers, a…

The Economic Dynamics of Spanish Colonialism in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries
The survival of the Spanish empire after the loss of the mainland American colonies is a neglected subject, and no part of it is more neglected than its economic features. General histories of Spain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries rarely touch on overseas matters, although the colonies do occasionally appear centre stage, as in 1868, when the Cuban Creoles rose in rebellion; in 1898, when Spain lost most of her colonies as a result of w…

Colonial Rule and Regional Imbalance in Central Africa
Business Empires in Equatorial Africa
In 1976, A. G. Hopkins called for the development of African business history. The workshop held in the School of Oriental and African Studies in May 1982 attempted to answer this call in regard to one of the most neglected regions of the continent, Equatorial or West Central Africa. Sixteen papers were presented by four discussants, and one arrived too late for discussion. The contributions in French and English ranged widely in content and prov…

Slaves, Peasants and Capitalists in Southern Angola 1840-1926
Slaves, Commoners and Landlords in Bulozi, c. 1875 to 1906
The much-researched history of Bulozi in the late nineteenth century is re-assessed here from a marxist viewpoint. A hereditary class of landlords owned the principal means of production and extracted rent in labour services and in kind from the direct producers. Tribute was also paid to the king and royal family, in recognition of the ultimate royal ownership of the means of production. Surplus was employed to increase leisure time, to indulge i…
For Braudel: A Note on the ‘Ecole des Annales ’ and the Historiography of Africa
The historiography of continental Europe has been revolutionized since the Second World War by a group of historians generally known as Annales School, from the name of the periodical which has served as their principal forum. Originally a somewhat eccentric group, they have come in the eyes of many to incarnate historical orthodoxy. And yet Africa has scarcely been touched by these profound currents which have so powerfully affected Europe. It t…
Underdevelopment and Class Formation in Ovamboland, 1845–1915
The Ovambo and their Nkhumbi neighbours live in a flood plain, which is artificially divided by the present frontier between Angola and Namibia. From the mid-nineteenth century until World War I, they underwent a process of underdevelopment and class formation linked to the evolution of commercial relations with western societies. Between 1845 and 1885 the ivory trade temporarily enriched the Ovambo and widened the productive base of their econom…
