Barriers to hypertension management in a developing country
A rapidly rising prevalence of hypertension (HTN) is observed in low-and-middle-income countries but few studies explore factors such as attitudes and beliefs, experiences and social and cultural conditions which affect its overall management. This study addresses this deficit through a qualitative assessment in adults with HTN from Sri Lanka. A phenomenological approach was used to explore patient experiences and perceptions regarding HTN manage…
Knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to hypertension among Sri Lankans
Despite Sri Lanka's high general literacy, significant gaps exist in HTN knowledge and practices. Public health strategies should focus on improving health literacy, addressing misconceptions, and promoting behavioural change through targeted interventions, particularly among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations
Low scoring IHR core capacities in low-income and lower-middle-income countries, 2018–2020

Estimation of the global prevalence of dementia in 2019 and forecasted prevalence in 2050
BACKGROUND: Given the projected trends in population ageing and population growth, the number of people with dementia is expected to increase. In addition, strong evidence has emerged supporting the importance of potentially modifiable risk factors for dementia. Characterising the distribution and magnitude of anticipated growth is crucial for public health planning and resource prioritisation. This study aimed to improve on previous forecasts of…
Population-level risks of alcohol consumption by amount, geography, age, sex, and year
BACKGROUND: The health risks associated with moderate alcohol consumption continue to be debated. Small amounts of alcohol might lower the risk of some health outcomes but increase the risk of others, suggesting that the overall risk depends, in part, on background disease rates, which vary by region, age, sex, and year. METHODS: For this analysis, we constructed burden-weighted dose-response relative risk curves across 22 health outcomes to esti…
Cancer Incidence, Mortality, Years of Life Lost, Years Lived With Disability, and Disability-Adjusted Life Years for 29 Cancer Groups From 2010 to 2019
IMPORTANCE: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019 (GBD 2019) provided systematic estimates of incidence, morbidity, and mortality to inform local and international efforts toward reducing cancer burden. OBJECTIVE: To estimate cancer burden and trends globally for 204 countries and territories and by Sociodemographic Index (SDI) quintiles from 2010 to 2019. EVIDENCE REVIEW: The GBD 2019 estimation methods were used t…
Global, regional, and national burden of stroke and its risk factors, 1990–2019
BACKGROUND: Regularly updated data on stroke and its pathological types, including data on their incidence, prevalence, mortality, disability, risk factors, and epidemiological trends, are important for evidence-based stroke care planning and resource allocation. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) aims to provide a standardised and comprehensive measurement of these metrics at global, regional, and national leve…
Global Burden of Cardiovascular Diseases and Risk Factors, 1990–2019
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), principally ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke, are the leading cause of global mortality and a major contributor to disability. This paper reviews the magnitude of total CVD burden, including 13 underlying causes of cardiovascular death and 9 related risk factors, using estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019. GBD, an ongoing multinational collaboration to provide comparable and consisten…
Knowledge and perceptions about diet and physical activity among Sri Lankan adults with diabetes mellitus
Despite understanding the importance of dietary control and physical activity in the management of diabetes, adherence to practices were poor, mainly due to lack of clarity of information provided. There were many myths with regards to diet, some of which have originated from health care professionals. More evidence is needed to support or refute the claims about 'special' foods that the participants believe as being good for diabetes
The influence of family history of Hypertension on disease prevalence and associated metabolic risk factors among Sri Lankan adults
Our results show that the prevalence of hypertension was significantly higher in those with a FH of hypertension. FH of hypertension was also associated with the prevalence of obesity, central obesity and metabolic syndrome. Individuals with a FH of hypertension form an easily identifiable group who may benefit from targeted interventions
Physical activity patterns and correlates among adults from a developing country
Objective To evaluate patterns of physical activity (PA), the prevalence of physical inactivity and the relationships between PA and sociodemographic, clinical and biochemical parameters among Sri Lankan adults. Design Descriptive cross-sectional study. Setting Nationally representative population-based survey conducted in Sri Lanka. Subjects Data on PA and associated details were obtained from 5000 adults. PA was assessed using the International…
