  • Multiple Job Holding, Job Changes, and Associations with Gestational Diabetes and Pregnancy-Related Hypertension in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study

Open Access•Amel Omari, Miriam Siegel et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

We used National Birth Defects Prevention Study data to investigate associations between working patterns shortly before and during pregnancy and gestational diabetes and pregnancy-related hypertension. We analyzed working patterns (multiple-job holders, job changers, single-job holders) during the three months before and during pregnancy for 8140 participants who delivered a live-born child without a birth defect. "Multiple-job holders" worked m…

  • Pre-pregnancy exposure to arsenic in diet and non-cardiac birth defects

Open Access•Jonathan Suhl, Kristin M Conway et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2023

Objectives: To explore associations between maternal pre-pregnancy exposure to arsenic in diet and non-cardiac birth defects. Design: This is a population-based, case–control study using maternal responses to a dietary assessment and published arsenic concentration estimates in food items to calculate average daily total and inorganic arsenic exposure during the year before pregnancy. Assigning tertiles of total and inorganic arsenic exposure, lo…

  • Characteristics of Clinical Trial Participants with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

    Open Access•Katherine D Mathews, Kristin M Conway et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2021

Clinical trial participation was identified among 17.9% (MD STAR net site: 3.7-27.3%) of 358 individuals with DMD. Corticosteroids, tadalafil, and ataluren (PTC124) were the most common trial medications recorded. Fewer non-Hispanic blacks or Hispanics than non-Hispanic whites participated in clinical trials. Trial participants tended to reside in counties with lower percentages of non-Hispanic blacks. Conclusion : Understanding characteristics a…

  • Does Maternal Exposure to Secondhand Tobacco Smoke During Pregnancy Increase the Risk for Preterm or Small-for-Gestational Age Birth

Open Access•Adrienne T Hoyt, Mark A Canfield et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2018

  • Estimated Maternal Pesticide Exposure from Drinking Water and Heart Defects in Offspring

Open Access•Jihye Kim, Michael D Swartz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

Our objective was to examine the relationship between estimated maternal exposure to pesticides in public drinking water and the risk of congenital heart defects (CHD). We used mixed-effects logistic regression to analyze data from 18,291 nonsyndromic cases with heart defects from the Texas Birth Defects Registry and 4414 randomly-selected controls delivered in Texas from 1999 through 2005. Water district-level pesticide exposure was estimated by…

  • Maternal Hypertension, Antihypertensive Medication Use, and Small for Gestational Age Births in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, 1997–2011

Open Access•for the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, Sarah C Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2017

  • Development and implementation of the first national data quality standards for population-based birth defects surveillance programs in the United States

    Open Access•Marlene Anderka, T Cara et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

This initial, nation-wide assessment of data quality across U.S. population-based birth defects surveillance programs highlights areas for improvement. Using this information to identify strengths and weaknesses, the birth defects surveillance community, working through the NBDPN, can enhance and implement a consistent set of standards that can promote uniformity and enable surveillance programs to work towards improving the potential of these pr…

  • Indirect and Direct Perceived Behavioral Control and the Role of Intention in the Context of Birth Control Behavior

Open Access•Jessica D Hanson, Faryle Nothwehr et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2014

  • Exploring Maternal Patterns of Dietary Caffeine Consumption Before Conception and During Pregnancy

Open Access•National Birth Defects Prevention Study, Lei Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2014

  • Maternal Caffeine Consumption and Small for Gestational Age Births

Open Access•the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, Adrienne T Hoyt et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2013

  • Effect of survey instrument on participation in a follow-up study

    Open Access•Carissa M Rocheleau, Paul A Romitti et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

We concluded that offering a MQ substantially improved participation rates and reduced recruitment effort compared to a CATI in this study. While a CATI has the advantage of being able to clarify answers to complex questions or eligibility requirements, our experience suggests that a MQ might be a good survey option for some studies

  • P2-260 Population-based prevalence of Duchenne/Becker muscular dystrophy (DBMD) in the USA

P Romitti, Paul A Romitti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Introduction DBMD has an estimated prevalence of 1/3500 male births. Worldwide, this estimate varies, likely due to differences in diagnostic criteria, ascertainment, and survival. To date, no U.S. population-based DBMD prevalence data by race/ethnicity have been published. Methods In 2002, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention established the MD STARnet to conduct population-based DBMD surveillance in four U.S. sites. Each site conducts…

  • P2-259 Cancer risk in children with birth defects

Paul A Romitti, Timothy J Flood et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Introduction The published literature, to date, is largely inconclusive regarding cancer risk among children with birth defects. To improve knowledge of such risk, we studied population-based (statewide) birth cohorts from Arizona, Iowa, and Utah selected from among 2.7 million births delivered from 1983 to 2006. Methods Birth defect and cancer diagnoses were identified from linked population-based surveillance systems. A population-based cohort …
