Dental prosthesis from the Augustinian tomb
Background: In 2021, an archaeological–anthropological–genetic investigation of the Augustinian tomb at the Central Cemetery in Brno included the exhumation of skeletal remains of five members of the Augustinian Order. During this research, dental prostheses were discovered in the deepest coffin. The skeletal remains from this grave were subsequently identified as those of Gregor Johann Mendel using several independent methodological approaches. …
Body remains of Gregor Johann Mendel, founder of genetics. Results of anthropogenetic research – From field to whole genome
Objective: To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Gregor Johann Mendel (July 20, 1822 – January 6, 1884), anthropogenetic research was conducted in 2022 on the skeletal remains of the founder of genetics and abbot of the Augustinian Monastery in Brno. Subjects and methods: This field research was preceded by an examination of items from Mendel’s estate at the Augustinian Abbey on Mendel Square in Brno. The necessary permits for cond…
Beyond osteology
Background: A complex burial deposited in a storage pit and dated to the 9th–10th centuries CE was re-examined using biomolecular archaeological approaches, integrating ancient DNA, palaeoproteomics, and previous palaeopathological analyses. The burial contained two adult women and two children, accompanied by animal remains and artefacts, with limited contextual information regarding the circumstances of deposition. Objective: The study aimed to…

Ritual Burials in a Prehistoric Mining Shaft in the Krumlov Forest (Czechia)
The Krumlov Forest (Czechia) revealed one of the largest chert mining fields in Europe, dated from the Mesolithic to the Hallstatt period. The largest shafts of the Late Lengyel culture were located on a slope below a re-deposited boulder. Shaft No. 4 yielded two skeletons of females; the lower one had a newborn placed on her breasts. Both females were found to be the shortest of the then population as a whole; they were weak, diseased and poorly…
Diachronic changes in dental health of Bronze Age rural populations from Nahal Refaim, Israel
We present the results of a study of dental pathology (specifically dental wear, caries, dental calculus, and enamel hypoplasia) carried out on 1108 teeth and empty alveoli of Bronze Age human populations that inhabited the rural settlement of Nahal Refaim, on the outskirts of the city of Jerusalem. The remains derive from a tomb complex that spans three phases of the period; Intermediate Bronze Age and the Middle Bronze Age I and Middle Bronze A…
Eneolitický kostrový pohřební ritus na Moravě ve světle radiokarbonového datování / The Eneolithic inhumation burial rite in Moravia in light of radiocarbon dating
The article addresses the chronology of Eneolithic inhumation burials in Moravia based on radiocarbon dating. A total of 17 individuals were dated using 20 radiocarbon dates, primarily individuals without grave goods or individuals from problematic contexts. The study mainly covers the period of the Early Eneolithic, to a lesser extent the Middle and Late Eneolithic. The find contexts and anthropological assessments are newly published for most o…

century CE in the South Moravian burial ground of Znojmo-Hradiště, to establish the association with incidence of dental caries, and to analyse the chemical element content of the enamel. The frequency and time of the development of enamel hypoplasia of the primary canine were established macroscopically. The chemical element content of the enamel was analysed via the EDX method. The incidence of LHPC is very high in this analysed collection in c…
Anthropological Prospection of Ossuary Situated in Saint James Church in Brno, Czech Republic
The anthropological research of the ossuary in the Church of St. James in Brno took place between the years 2011 and 2012.The research was connected with the reconstruction of the ossuary and its opening to the public. As it was to be cleared up and re-arranged, the aim of this research was to rescue and examine the original human skeletons buried in the church. It was impossible to examine all skeletal remains due to capacity and technical limitat…

Sex determination of skeletal remains of 4000 year old children and juveniles from Hoštice 1 za Hanou (Czech Republic) by ancient DNA analysis
The aim of this study was to determine the sex by means of modern molecular genetic methods of children and immature individuals from the 4000 years old Eneolithic burial site "Hoštice 1 za Hanou" of the Bell-Beaker people, in central Moravia (Czech Republic). While the anthropological approach was in this case limited either by the state of preservation of the skeletal remains or simply by absence of definite morphological traits in the children…
A rediscovered fragment of a human mandible from Predmostí u Prerova (Czech Republic)
The paper presents a right mandibular fragment of Predmosti 21, recently rediscovered in the Museum of Olomouc (Moravia). It is a Gravettian fossil thought to have been destroyed during the Second World War. The authenticity of the fossil and its description are discussed and it is also compared with other fossils of the Moravian Upper Palaeolithic
