  • Effect of changes in sleeping behavior on skeletal muscle and fat mass

Open Access•Jihun Song, Sun Jae Park et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Our results showed that changes in sleep quality and duration affect changes in muscle and fat mass. Thus, we suggest maintaining a good quality of sleep, even if sleep duration is reduced, to preserve muscle mass and inhibit the accumulation of fat

  • Association between community-level social trust and the risk of dementia

Open Access•Jaeyi Hong, Sun Jae Park et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Introduction: It is known that biological risk factors and lifestyle behaviors are important determinants of dementia. However, there has been yet to be sufficient evidence to prove that community-level social capital is one of the determinants of dementia. This retrospective cohort study is a large, long-term, population-based study that investigated the association between community-level social trust and the risk of dementia in the Republic of…

  • Association between consumption of fruits and vegetables with suicidal ideation

Open Access•In Cheol Hwang, Seulggie Choi•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2022

Objective: To investigate the association between fruit and vegetable (F&V) intake with suicidal ideation. Design: Cross-sectional study using a Korean Community Health Survey. Setting: F&V consumers were defined as individuals who had consumed fruits or vegetables more than once per day. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with suicidal ideation including F&V consumption and to estimate the prevalenc…

  • Association of Short-Term Particulate Matter Exposure among 5-Year Cancer Survivors with Incident Cardiovascular Disease

Open Access•Seulggie Choi, Kyae Hyung Kim et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The association of short-term particulate matter concentration with cardiovascular disease (CVD) among cancer survivors is yet unclear. Using the National Health Insurance Service database from South Korea, the study population consisted of 22,864 5-year cancer survivors with CVD events during the period 2015-2018. Using a time-stratified case-crossover design, each case date (date of incident CVD) was matched with three or four referent dates, r…

  • Association of Air Pollutants with Incident Chronic Kidney Disease in a Nationally Representative Cohort of Korean Adults

Open Access•Seo Yun Hwang, Seogsong Jeong et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

    (1) Background: There is limited information regarding association between long-term exposure to air pollutants and risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) (2). Methods: This study acquired data of 164,093 adults aged at least 40 years who were residing in 7 metropolitan cities between 2002 and 2005 from the Korean National Health Insurance Service National Sample Cohort database. CKD risk was evaluated using the multivariate Cox hazards proportiona…

  • The Association of 5α-Reductase Inhibitor With Suicidality

Jihoon Kim, Jihoon A Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2020

OBJECTIVE: Using a large nationwide cohort, this study aimed to determine the risk of suicide after the use of a 5α-reductase inhibitor, an antiandrogenic medication commonly used in the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms. METHODS: A retrospective population-based cohort study was performed using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. The study consisted of 51,466 men 60 years or older who underwent health examinations betw…

  • Association between Post-Diagnosis Particulate Matter Exposure among 5-Year Cancer Survivors and Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Three Metropolitan Areas from South Korea

Open Access•Seulggie Choi, Kyae Hyung Kim et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Cancer survivors are at an increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the association between particulate matter (PM) and CVD risk among cancer survivors (alive >5 years since diagnosis) is unclear. We investigated the risk of CVD among 40,899 cancer survivors within the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Exposure to PM was determined by assessing yearly average PM levels obtained from the Air Korea database from 20…

  • Association between Social Trust and Metabolic Syndrome in a Previously Healthy Population—A Longitudinal Cohort Study in South Korea

Open Access•Hyeah Park, Seulggie Choi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Background: Social trust, assessed by the trustworthiness of one another in a community, is known to have beneficial effects on health outcomes. However, the impact of social trust on metabolic syndrome (MetS) is unclear. Methods: The study subjects were extracted from the Korean National Health Insurance Service, and social trust was obtained from the Korean Community Health Survey (KCHS). Previously healthy participants were followed up from 1 …

  • Association of smoking cessation after atrial fibrillation diagnosis on the risk of cardiovascular disease

Open Access•Seulggie Choi, Jooyoung Chang et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Smoking cessation after AF diagnosis was associated with reduced CVD, total stroke, and ischemic stroke risk

  • Exposure to ambient fine particulate matter is associated with changes in fasting glucose and lipid profiles

    Open Access•Woo-Young Shin, Jung‐Ha Kim et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Fine particulate matter exposure affects worsening fasting glucose and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, with no evidence of an association for coarse particulate matter

  • Association between social trust and the risk of cardiovascular disease in older adults in Korea

Open Access•Seo Eun Hwang, Seulggie Choi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Higher social trust was associated with reduced risk of CVD even after considering lifestyle behaviors. Social trust in a community level is an important determinant of CVD and enhancing social trust may lead to reduced risk of CVD

  • Association of community level social trust and reciprocity with mortality

Open Access•Seulggie Choi, Juhwan Oh et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Residing in areas with high community level social trust and reciprocity may be associated with better population health status
