Waterpipe smoking and health outcomes
The prevalence of waterpipe smoking (WPS) is increasingly recognised as a growing global public health concern. Available studies show that WPS exposes users to toxicants at levels similar to or higher than those in cigarette smoke, contributing to respiratory disease, cardiovascular damage and cancer. The WHO has flagged WPS as a growing threat, especially among adolescents and young adults, where use is rapidly increasing. Yet research progress…
The impact of economic sanctions on cancer diagnosis and treatment in Iran
Although economic sanctions against Iran have not officially targeted healthcare and access to drugs, they have restricted access to standard equipment and modern technologies, leading to increased delays, misdiagnosis, and diagnostic and therapeutic side effects in cancer patients to the point of death
Dietary soluble, insoluble, and total fiber intake and their dietary sources in association with breast cancer
Dietary fiber intake and more specifically insoluble, fruits', and vegetables' fiber intake might be associated with a reduced breast cancer risk, particularly in premenopausal women. Future prospective investigations are needed to confirm these findings
Determinants of waterpipe smoking in Iranian adults
Our results offer valuable information to policymakers for developing waterpipe smoking control measures. The occasional waterpipe smoking results may be generalized to the younger people in Western countries
Association between dietary total antioxidant capacity and breast cancer
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between dietary total antioxidant capacity (dTAC) and risk of breast cancer among Iranian women. Design: In this hospital-based case–control study, dietary intake of participants was collected using a 168-item validated FFQ. Dietary TAC was assessed using FRAP assay considering. Logistic regression was used to obtain ORs for breast cancer across quartiles of dTAC. Setting: Cancer …
The role of knowledge, risk perceptions, and cues to action among Iranian women concerning cervical cancer and screening
The results indicate a strong need to invest more efforts to improve health education and communication in the current national health program to promote awareness of the need to screen for CC through, for example, establishing correct knowledge and risk perceptions among women. In addition, this intervention should address women's social environment in order to prevent misconceptions being communicated to women
Global, Regional, and National Cancer Incidence, Mortality, Years of Life Lost, Years Lived With Disability, and Disability-Adjusted Life-Years for 29 Cancer Groups, 1990 to 2017
Importance Cancer and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are now widely recognized as a threat to global development. The latest United Nations high-level meeting on NCDs reaffirmed this observation and also highlighted the slow progress in meeting the 2011 Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the third Sustainable Development Goal. Lack of situational analyses, priority setting, and budgeting hav…
Measuring progress from 1990 to 2017 and projecting attainment to 2030 of the health-related Sustainable Development Goals for 195 countries and territories
BACKGROUND: Efforts to establish the 2015 baseline and monitor early implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight both great potential for and threats to improving health by 2030. To fully deliver on the SDG aim of "leaving no one behind", it is increasingly important to examine the health-related SDGs beyond national-level estimates. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2…
Cancer incidence in the East Azerbaijan province of Iran in 2015–2016
The results of the East Azerbaijan Population-based Cancer Registry show a high incidence of cancer in this province, especially gastrointestinal cancers
Research Ethics Education in Post‐Graduate Medical Curricula in I.R. Iran
Research ethics training during post-graduate education is necessary to improve ethical standards in the design and conduct of biomedical research. We studied quality and quantity of research ethics training in the curricula of post-graduate programs in the medical science in I.R. Iran. We evaluated curricula of 125 post-graduate programs in medical sciences in I.R. Iran. We qualitatively studied the curricula by education level, including the Ma…
Association of socioeconomic status with consumption of cigarettes, illicit drugs, and alcohol
Introduction and Aims: Socioeconomic Status (SES) is considered as one of the important factors associated with use of various drugs. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of SES on cigarette smoking, alcohol use, drug use, and passive exposure to opium and cigarette smoke. Design and Methods: In this study, which is part of a multicenter case-control study, the research hypothesis was checked among controls who had referred to hospit…
P2-342 Geographical pattern and epidemiology of stomach cancer mortality in Iran
Background Stomach cancer is the second commonest cause of mortality from cancer worldwide; in Iran it is the commonest. Geographical variation in the incidence of stomach cancer is reported. Data describing the geographical distribution of disease in Iran are lacking. The aim of this study was to examine geographical variation in stomach cancer mortality in Iran. Methods We used the Iranian National Causes of Death Registry and estimated age-sta…
SP3-79 Audit of a nationwide pathology-based cancer registry in Iran and lessons learned from successful population-based cancer registries worldwide
Background Several low- and middle- income countries, lack well-functioning population-based cancer registry. We evaluated the completeness of a pathology based cancer registry in Iran. We further studies evolutionary progress of the cancer registries worldwide. Methods We evaluated consistency of the incidence rates reported by national pathology-based cancer registry in Iran from 2004 to 2007. We further compared the incidence rates of the path…
