Open Access•Judith Kimiywe, Hope C Craig et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2022

Infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices are influenced by many context-specific factors related to local food systems as well as social and cultural practices. Understanding these local contextual perspectives is essential for designing effective programs and policies. This paper uses focused ethnographic study methods to examine challenges experienced by mothers related to IYCF in two counties in Kenya, a country with considerable hetero…

  • Effectiveness of the baby‐friendly community initiative on exclusive breastfeeding in Kenya

Open Access•Elizabeth Kimani‐Murage, Judith Kimiywe et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2021

The baby-friendly hospital initiative (BFHI) promotes exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) in hospitals, but this is not accessible in rural settings where mothers give birth at home, hence the need for a community intervention. We tested the effectiveness of the baby-friendly community initiative (BFCI) on EBF in rural Kenya. This cluster randomized study was conducted in 13 community units in Koibatek sub-county. Pregnant women aged 15-49 years were r…

Open Access•Lauriina Schneider, Mikko Kosola et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2021

Objective: The objective was to explore mothers’ perceptions on educational videos on infant and young child-feeding practices, and to assess whether viewing frequencies would influence maternal knowledge, attitudes and feeding practices (KAP). Design: A set of forty-seven videos were displayed in health centres for 6 months. At 3 months, we conducted focus group discussions (FGD) with mothers and, at 6 months, administered KAP-questionnaire-base…

  • Is competence enough to enable Kenyan mothers to make good infant and young child feeding decisions

Open Access•Lauriina Schneider, Sari Ollila et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2017

The aim of this study was to explore factors associated with maternal infant and young child feeding motivation in urban and rural Kenya. We conducted 18 focus group discussions with mothers of children 0 to 23 months of age and healthcare workers. The data were transcribed, translated, and explored following the principles of content analysis. We first explored and coded the data inductively and categorized it according to emerging themes repres…

  • Zinc, iron and calcium are major limiting nutrients in the complementary diets of rural Kenyan children

Open Access•Elaine L Ferguson, Peter Chege et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2015

Poor quality infant and young child (IYC) diets contribute to chronic under-nutrition. To design effective IYC nutrition interventions, an understanding of the extent to which realistic food-based strategies can improve dietary adequacy is required. We collected 24-h dietary recalls from children 6-23 months of age (n = 401) in two rural agro-ecological zones of Kenya to assess the nutrient adequacy of their diets. Linear programming analysis (LP…

  • Predictors of overweight and obesity in adult women in Nairobi Province, Kenya

Open Access•Regina W Mbochi, Elizabeth Kuria et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

The predictors of overweight and obesity showed that urbanization and the nutrition transition were well established in the sample of women studied in the high SE groups. They exhibited a sedentary lifestyle and consumed a diet high in energy, protein, fat, cholesterol, and alcohol and lower in fibre and carbohydrate compared with those in the low SE groups
