Examining the Attributional Links Between Message Quality and Outcomes of Emotional Support Received on Facebook
Facebook users can receive high quality emotional support in response to their posts, but not all emotional support is of the same quality nor does it all benefit support receivers. Receivers’ perceptions of supportive messages influence the outcomes they experience. This study assessed support receivers’ attributions for the helpful support offered to them on Facebook to understand how their perceptions of the causes of that support may explain …
Seeking support via mediated channels: The roles of impression goals, stigma, severity, and perceived affordances
Previous research suggests that impression management goals and face threats can be barriers to seeking support, especially among college students and those facing severe problems that are highly stigmatized. In such cases, technologically-mediated communication channels (TMCCs) may be an important resource because they have unique affordances that can help overcome impression concerns and thereby promote well-being. To examine this possibility, …

Impact of Covid-19 on Virtual Guitar Communities: An Immersive Netnography
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the music industry was already experiencing uncertainty as musicians experimented with new modes of dissemination and monetization following developments in telecommunications. The arrival of the internet instigated varying, sometimes contradictory, cultural concerns including dispersion, dissipation, preservation, development, homogenization and heterogeneity. Guitar players have traditionally formed local network…
Embryonic stem cells: Scientific possibilities, ethical considerations, and regulation in the UK
Embryonic stem ( ES ) cells are believed to be able to differentiate into all tissues found within the human body. Potentially, these cells could be manipulated in the laboratory to induce the formation of specialised cells and new tissues which could be used to treat diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, heart disease, and kidney failure. The isolation of these cells involves the destruction of a five day…

Troubled waters: Argument as sociability revisited
Schiffrin 1984 has claimed that there is a speech activity called "sociable argument," characterized by the presence of discursive features such as vulnerability of argumentative frames and cooperative strategies. Although a form of talk aptly labeled "sociable argument" undoubtedly exists, Schiffrin's analysis is problematic; the features she identifies as characteristic of this discursive category also show up in argument that is serious and no…

Image and Speech-Style in The Australian Television Commercial
THIS paper is in two parts. In the first part I re-examine the Mitchell and Delbridge 1965 model of variation in Australian English in the light of Labovian sociolinguistic methodology. Although recent work has clearly undermined the concept of discrete social dialects on which the Mitchell-Delbridge model was based, I will argue that a re-interpretation of certain aspects of this model may well have a contribution to make to the investigation of…

Do Children Infer Underlying Structures
Aitchison 1976 and others have argued that children acquire the syntax of their native language by 'learning surface patterns and how to manipulate them', rather than by inferring a level of underlying structure in the general sense of transformational grammar. This paper seeks to refute Aitchison's position by attempting to show that the arguments on which the conclusion is based are unsound. The original evidence (progressive aspect, full and t…
