Building the foundation
Early and ongoing stakeholder engagement is critical to the development and implementation of scalable behavioral health interventions. Our overarching goal in this implementation research study was to understand and document the process of planning and rolling out Common Elements Treatment Approach (CETA), a transdiagnostic mental health intervention, in Uganda. Guided by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) 2.0, we cond…
Implementation, sustainability, and impact of Common Elements Treatment Approach in Ugandan healthcare facilities
The health and social consequences of untreated mental health disorders and heavy alcohol use are substantial, particularly in settings with high HIV-prevalence. Transdiagnostic approaches may offer a more efficient public health response, particularly where behavioral health services are limited. The present study explored the implementation of Common Elements Treatment Approach (CETA), a transdiagnostic intervention, in Western Uganda, from the…
Improving HPV vaccine acceptance through peer-to-peer education among adolescent girls in the urban poor settings of Kisenyi, Kampala, Uganda
In Uganda, cervical cancer due to Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the most prevalent cancer among women. In 2015, the HPV vaccine was introduced into Uganda’s EPI program, targeting young girls in-and out-of-school. However, HPV vaccine uptake remains low at 44% for the second dose with disparities in vulnerable populations in urban poor settings. We piloted a peer-to-peer education approach in the urban slums of Kisenyi in Kampala, Uganda to addr…
Uptake of reproductive, maternal and child health services during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic in Uganda
Use of reproductive health (RH), maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services in Uganda is suboptimal. Reasons for this are complex; however, service-delivery factors such as availability, quality, staffing, and supplies, contribute substantially to low uptake. The COVID-19 pandemic threatened to exacerbate existing challenges to delivery and use of high-quality RH and MNCH services. We conducted a mixed methods study, combining secondary a…
Retrospective identification of key activities in Uganda’s preparedness measures related to the 2018–2020 EVD outbreak in eastern DRC utilizing a framework evaluation tool
Uganda has engaged in numerous capacity building activities related to outbreak preparedness over the last two decades and initiated additional just-in-time preparedness activities after the declaration of the 2018–2020 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). When Uganda faced importation events related to the DRC outbreak in June—August 2019, the country’s ability to prevent sustained in-country transmis…
Endure and excuse’
Intimate partner violence and HIV remain significant health challenges among women living with HIV. Intimate partner violence has been linked to negative health outcomes and poorer HIV care engagement. This study examined intimate partner violence among Ugandan women living with HIV, their experiences disclosing such violence and how culturally normative factors affected disclosure-related outcomes. In a mixed-methods study conducted in Uganda in…
The extent to which the design of available reproductive health interventions fit the reproductive health needs of adolescents living in urban poor settings of Kisenyi, Kampala, Uganda
The packaging and mode of delivery of interventions were perceived less holistic to meet the adolescents' needs. Most interventions were designed to address the sexual and family planning needs while ignoring the wider social and livelihood needs. More holistic and outreach-based programming that addresses RH within the broader context of livelihood and sanitation requirements are more likely to be effective
Lowland grazing and Marburg virus disease (MVD) outbreak in Kween district, Eastern Uganda
There is need to integrate One Health concepts within agricultural extension service provision in Uganda so as to enhance the management of such infectious diseases
The performance of community health workers in the management of multiple childhood infectious diseases in Lira, northern Uganda – a mixed methods cross-sectional study
BACKGROUND: Community health workers (CHWs) have the potential to reduce child mortality by improving access to care, especially in remote areas. Uganda has one of the highest child mortality rates globally. Moreover, rural areas bear the highest proportion of this burden. The optimal performance of CHWs is critical. In this study, we assess the performance of CHWs in managing malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhea in the rural district of Lira, in nor…
