  • Barriers and facilitators to participation of men who have sex with men and transgender women in HIV research in Jamaica

Sharlene Beckford Jarrett, Robin Flanagan et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2020

To assess potential barriers and facilitators to participation in bio-behavioural surveillance surveys of men who have sex with men and transgender women (trans women) in Jamaica, we recruited participants for individual interviews and focus group discussions. Respondents included 3 trans women; 46 gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men; and 3 cis gender women. Data from 46 men and 3 trans women were analysed to describe barriers and f…

  • Contexts of risk and networks of protection: NYC West Indian immigrants' perceptions of migration and vulnerability to sexually transmitted diseases

Hoffman, Susie Hoffman et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2011

To generate insights into how migration shapes sexual risk and protection, we interviewed 36 female and 20 male West Indian immigrants attending a public sexually transmitted disease clinic in Brooklyn, New York, between 2004 and 2005. Migration theory suggests that shifts in sexual partnership patterns, bi-directional travel and changes in sexual norms may alter risk. We found evidence of sexual mixing across ethnic groups: a large proportion of…

  • HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infection Risk Behaviors and Beliefs Among Black West Indian Immigrants and US-Born Blacks

Hoffman, Susie Hoffman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 19

Objectives. We compared Black West Indian immigrants' and US-born Blacks' sexual and drug-use risk behaviors and their beliefs related to using condoms and informing partners of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to identify possible differences in risk. Methods. We drew data from the baseline assessment of a clinic-based intervention designed to increase partner STI notification. Results. Black West Indian men were less likely than were US-b…

  • HIV follow-up care at a London teaching hospital

Cristy Leask, Caroline Sabin et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•1998

Counselling around all stages of HIV infection is important for those infected and affected with HIV disease. Partner notification may promote safer sexual practices and increase HIV-related social support which might in turn prompt the psychological adjustment to a terminal illness. This paper describes the counselling service used at the Royal Free Hospital's HIV Unit and explores the notification patterns of an HIV diagnosis to family, partner…
