  • Psychometric evaluation of the somatic symptom scale − 8 in patients with somatic symptom disorder in Iran

Open Access•Imaneh Abasi, Ala Ghapanchi et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2024

  • Lessons learned from applying established cut-off values of questionnaires to detect somatic symptom disorders in primary care

Open Access•Victoria Von Schrottenberg, Anne Toussaint et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

Our analyzes strongly suggest that the sensitivity and specificity estimates reported for combination #1 are not applicable to unselected primary care patients and that the cut-off for the SSD (≥23) is too strict. Cut-off combination #2 seems more applicable but still needs to be tested in studies that compare screening findings by questionnaires with validated diagnostic interviews as reference standards in primary care populations

  • Response to Commentary

Open Access•Paul Hüsing, Abigail Smakowski et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

Persistent somatic symptoms (PSS) are common in all fields of medicine. Current classification systems for mental disorders in this field, i.e. Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD; DSM-5) or Bodily Distress Disorder (BDD; ICD-11), now stress the relevance of psychological features associated with the physical complaints. It is well known that psychological criteria are among the relevant risk factors for the development and/or worsening of persistent p…

  • Differences in psychometric characteristics of outpatients with somatic symptom disorder from general hospital biomedical (neurology/gastroenterology), traditional Chinese medicine, and psychosomatic …

Open Access•Dandan Ma, Wei Lu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

SSD patients from psychosomatic departments had higher level of somatic symptom severity, depression and anxiety than from TCM and biomedical settings. In our specific sample, a cutoff point of ≥16 for SSD-12 could be recommended in all three settings. But the cutoff point of PHQ-15 differs much between different settings, which was ≥8, 9, and 11 in biomedical, TCM, and psychosomatic settings, respectively

  • Validation of the Chinese version of the Somatic Symptom Scale-8 in patients from tertiary hospitals in China

Open Access•Tao Li, Jing Wei et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Our preliminary assessment suggests that the Chinese language version of the SSS-8 has reliability and validity sufficient to warrant testing further in research and clinical settings

  • Detecting DSM-5 somatic symptom disorder in general hospitals in China

Open Access•Jinya Cao, Jing Wei et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

In general hospital settings, SSD-12 or WI-8 alone may be sufficient for detecting somatic symptom disorder, as effective as when combined with the PHQ-15 or SSS-8 for evaluating physical burden

  • Excessiveness in Symptom-Related Thoughts, Feelings, and Behaviors

Anne Toussaint, Paul Hüsing et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2021

OBJECTIVE: The diagnostic criteria of somatic symptom disorder (SSD) emphasize that somatic symptoms receive disease value once they are accompanied by excessive thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. The main objective of this study was to examine what constitutes excessiveness in psychological reactions to somatic complaints and how excessive symptom-related behavior influences self-reported health status and health care utilization. METHODS: A nati…

  • Sensitivity to change and minimal clinically important difference of the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire (GAD-7)

Open Access•Anne Toussaint, Paul Hüsing et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Affective Disorders•2020

  • Validation of the Chinese Version of the Somatic Symptom Disorder–B Criteria Scale for Detecting DSM-5 Somatic Symptom Disorders

Tao Li, Jing Wei et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2020

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to validate the Chinese version of the Somatic Symptom Disorder-B Criteria Scale (SSD-12) in an outpatient sample from Chinese general hospitals and to determine the diagnostic performance of the SSD-12 as a screening tool for somatic symptom disorder (SSD). METHODS: The Chinese version of the SSD-12 was completed by 699 outpatients from nine general hospitals during a 16-month period (2016-2018). The SSD section of th…

  • Core Outcome Domains for Clinical Trials on Somatic Symptom Disorder, Bodily Distress Disorder, and Functional Somatic Syndromes

    Winfried Rief, C Burton et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2017

OBJECTIVE: The harmonization of core outcome domains in clinical trials facilitates comparison and pooling of data, and simplifies the preparation and review of research projects and comparison of risks and benefits of treatments. Therefore, we provide recommendations for the core outcome domains that should be considered in clinical trials on the efficacy and effectiveness of interventions for somatic symptom disorder, bodily distress disorder, …

  • Development and Validation of the Somatic Symptom Disorder–B Criteria Scale (SSD-12)

Anne Toussaint, Alexandra Murray et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2016

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a new self-report questionnaire for the assessment of the psychological features of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition somatic symptom disorder. METHODS: The Somatic Symptom Disorder-B Criteria Scale (SSD-12) was developed in several steps from an initial pool of 98 items. The SSD-12 is composed of 12 items; each of the three psychological subcriteria is measured by four items. …
