  • A Trauma-Informed, Family-Centered, Virtual Home Visiting Program for Young Children: One-Year Outcomes

    Open Access•Catherine Mogil, Nastassia J Hajal et al.•ARTICLE•Child Psychiatry & Human…•2021

Military-connected families face many challenges associated with military life transitions, including deployment separations. We report on a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of Families OverComing Under Stress-Early Childhood (FOCUS-EC) delivered through an in-home, virtual telehealth platform. FOCUS-EC is a trauma-informed, family-centered preventive intervention designed to promote family resilience and well-being. Military-…

  • Parental emotion and emotion regulation: A critical target of study for research and intervention to promote child emotion socialization

    Nastassia J Hajal, Blair Paley•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2020•Cited by: 21

Parents' behaviors-particularly their emotion socialization behaviors (ESBs)-drive children's emotion socialization (Eisenberg, Cumberland, & Spinrad, 1998). We propose that a major next step in the effort to promote healthy emotional development is to improve the field's understanding of the most proximal contributor to parent ESBs: parents' own experience and regulation of emotions in the context of caregiving. As an initial step, this paper in…

Design. Questionnaires, interviews, and behavioral observations were used to assess study variables in 42 mother - child dyads. Results. • Understanding Families as Systems

    Open Access•Martha J Cox, Blair Paley•ARTICLE•Current Directions in Psychological…•2003

In this article, we discuss recent research that has arisen from theoretical and conceptual models that use a systems metaphor for understanding families. We suggest that research stimulated by such models leads social scientists in new and important directions in understanding the social and emotional development of children in their families. These models view development as resulting from the dynamic transactions across multiple levels of fami…

  • Interparental Conflict and Parent–Child Relationships

Open Access•Martha J Cox, Blair Paley et al.•CHAPTER•Interparental Conflict and Child…•2001

A considerable body of literature documents the relation between marital conflict and emotional and behavioral problems in children (e.g., Cummings & Davies, 1994; Emery, 1982; Grych & Fincham, 1990). The field has now moved on to consider the mechanisms and processes through which marital conflict undermines the emotional and behavioral competence of children (Fincham, 1994). Much of the theorizing about such processes has centered on the parent…

  • Parents' Affect, Adolescent Cognitive Representations, and Adolescent Social Development

Open Access•Blair Paley, Rand D Conger et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2000•Cited by: 4•References: 39

Prior research regarding the role of parent-child relationships in children's social development generally has been limited to concurrent or short-term longitudinal data and has focused primarily on mothers' influence in the early or middle childhood years. Using a multimethod, multiinformant design, the present study extends previous findings by examining whether maternal and paternal affect predicted adolescent social behavior and peer acceptan…

  • Families as Systems

Martha J Cox, Blair Paley•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Psychology•1997

In this chapter, we discuss theoretical and conceptual models that use an organismic or systems metaphor for understanding families. We suggest that such theories are important for stimulating new research and organizing existing data, and that advances in these theories over the past few decades have expanded the potential for understanding child development, as well as adult adaptation and the development of close relationships. These paradigms…
