  • Ecological Security Zoning Considering Land Degradation Neutrality

Open Access•Qingwen Hong, Qiulin Xiong et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2026

Ecological security serves as a critical metric for assessing regional sustainable development. Climate change and human activities have intensified the deterioration of global ecosystems, which cause deterioration of ecosystem health and land degradation, and threaten ecological security. Consequently, this study addresses land degradation and ecosystem health by employing the United Nations Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) assessment framework…

  • Mapping Soil Heavy Metal Using an Interpretable Framework With Multi‐Sources Data

Open Access•Bifeng Hu, Yibo Geng et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2026

Predicting the spatial heterogeneity of soil heavy metals (HMs) and identifying the determinants and sources is fundamental to developing effective strategies to mitigate and prevent environmental contamination. This study established a comprehensive research framework of “spatial prediction ‐ driver factor analysis ‐ source contribution quantification”. By comparing and using different methods to draw the spatial distribution map of HMs and comb…

  • Spatio-temporal dynamics and drivers of cropland ecosystem services value during the past two decades in Yangtze river economic belt, China

Open Access•Hanjun Xia, Pengbo Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction: Cropland ecosystem is one of the fundamental natural resources for human survival and development, serving not only as the core carrier of food production but also as an important provider of ecological services. Clarifying the spatio-temporal variation of the cropland ecosystem service value (Crop-ESV) and understanding its main drivers are critical for maintaining and regulating cropland ecosystem functions. Methods: Thus, this st…

  • Comparison of Machine Learning and Geostatistical Methods on Mapping Soil Organic Carbon Density in Regional Croplands and Visualizing Its Location‐Specific Dominators via Interpretable Model

Open Access•Bifeng Hu, Yibo Geng et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2025

High‐precision soil organic carbon density (SOCD) map is significant for understanding ecosystem carbon cycles and estimating soil organic carbon storage. However, the current mapping methods are difficult to balance accuracy and interpretability, which brings great challenges to the mapping of SOCD. In the present research, a total of 6223 soil samples were collected, along with data pertaining to 30 environmental covariates, from agricultural l…

  • Regional concentrations of heavy metals in surface soils and risk of body pain in elderly residential population

Open Access•Bingjie Qu, Bifeng Hu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Our results indicate that higher soil arsenic exposure is associated with an increased risk of pain in specific body regions. This study is the first examining the associations between multiple heavy metals in surface soil and the risks of pain in different body sites. Our findings provide new insights into the health risks of soil heavy metal exposure

  • Effects of straw return on soil carbon sequestration, soil nutrients and rice yield of in acidic farmland soil of Southern China

Open Access•Hongyi Li, Modian Xie et al.•ARTICLE•Environment Development and…•2024

  • Mapping soil organic matter and identifying potential controls in the farmland of Southern China

Open Access•Bifeng Hu, Hanjie Ni et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2023

Soil organic matter (SOM) plays a critical role in terrestrial ecosystem functioning and is closely related to many global issues like soil fertility, soil health and climate regulation. Therefore, obtaining accurate information on the spatial distribution of SOM and its potential controlling factors is of global interest. However, this remains a great challenge since SOM is affected by numerous natural and anthropogenic factors and usually showe…

  • Improvement of Spatial Modeling of Cr, Pb, Cd, As and Ni in Soil Based on Portable X-ray Fluorescence (PXRF) and Geostatistics

Open Access•Fang Xia, Bifeng Hu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

To verify the feasibility of portable X-ray fluorescence (PXRF) for rapidly analyzing, assessing and improving soil heavy metals mapping, 351 samples were collected from Fuyang District, Hangzhou City, in eastern China. Ordinary kriging (OK) and co-ordinary kriging (COK) combined with PXRF measurements were used to explore spatial patterns of heavy metals content in the soil. The Getis-Ord index was calculated to discern hot spots of heavy metals…

  • Heavy Metal Pollution Delineation Based on Uncertainty in a Coastal Industrial City in the Yangtze River Delta, China

Open Access•Bifeng Hu, Ruiying Zhao et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Assessing heavy metal pollution and delineating pollution are the bases for evaluating pollution and determining a cost-effective remediation plan. Most existing studies are based on the spatial distribution of pollutants but ignore related uncertainty. In this study, eight heavy-metal concentrations (Cr, Pb, Cd, Hg, Zn, Cu, Ni, and Zn) were collected at 1040 sampling sites in a coastal industrial city in the Yangtze River Delta, China. The singl…

  • Source Identification and Apportionment of Trace Elements in Soils in the Yangtze River Delta, China

Open Access•Shuai Shao, Bifeng Hu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Trace elements pollution has attracted a lot of attention worldwide. However, it is difficult to identify and apportion the sources of multiple element pollutants over large areas because of the considerable spatial complexity and variability in the distribution of trace elements in soil. In this study, we collected total of 2051 topsoil (0−20 cm) samples, and analyzed the general pollution status of soils from the Yangtze River Delta, Southeast …

  • Assessment of Heavy Metal Pollution and Health Risks in the Soil-Plant-Human System in the Yangtze River Delta, China

Open Access•Bifeng Hu, Xiaolin Jia et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

Heavy metal (HM) contamination and accumulation is a serious problem around the world due to the toxicity, abundant sources, non-biodegradable properties, and accumulative behaviour of HMs. The degree of soil HM contamination in China, especially in the Yangtze River Delta, is prominent. In this study, 1822 pairs of soil and crop samples at corresponding locations were collected from the southern Yangtze River Delta of China, and the contents of …
