Split-antecedent relative clauses and the symmetry of predicates
This paper presents the results of two experiments in German testing the acceptabilityof (non-)restrictive relative clauses (NRCs/RRCs) with split antecedents (SpAs). Accordingto Moltmann (1992), SpAs are only grammatical if their parts occur within the conjuncts ofa coordinate structure and if they have identical grammatical functions. Non-conjoined SpAsthat form the subject and the object of a transitive verb are predicted to be ungrammatical. …
Imagination, Psychologistic Semantics, and the Paradox of Fictional Names
Quantification over alternative intensions
In footnote 13 on p. 85f. of his dissertation, Mats Rooth (1985) addresses certain peculiarities of his treatment of only as a quantifier over propositions. The current note elaborates on that footnote to conclude that the lack of adequacy of this approach to quantification is more severe than previously thought. Section 1 presents a gap in the alternative[s] semantics treatment of only. In Section 2 an attempt is made to close it by way of meani…

On Truckenbrodt on Interrogatives
Introduction In his contribution to the present volume, Hubert Truckenbrodt presents a novel and elegant account of the connection between the syntactic structure of an utterance and the illocutionary force signalled by it. In this short note we cannot do justice to the entire approach with its intricate architecture, which is why we decided to confine ourselves to a few scattered remarks relating to the analysis of interrogatives — partly fore-s…
What's in two names?
As first pointed out by Saul (1997a), the co-referential names in sentences like (1) and (2) defy substitution salva veritate: (1) Clark Kent went into the phone booth, and Superman came out. (2) I never made it to Karl-Marx-Stadt, but I visited Chemnitz last year. This paper elaborates and compares two solutions to Saul's substitution problem, both of which turn on an asymmetry between names that share their bearers. According to the first solut…
Free Choice Disjunction and Epistemic Possibility
Knowledge of meaning. An introduction to semantic theory
Frege's Theory of Sense and Reference: Its Origins and Scope
Tertiumne datur?
On the proper treatment of opacity in certain verbs

Rezension: Jong, Franciska de/Oversteegen, Leonoor/Verkuyl, Henk: Betekenis en taalstructuur. Inleiding in de formele semantiek
Article Rezension: Jong, Franciska de/Oversteegen, Leonoor/Verkuyl, Henk: Betekenis en taalstructuur. Inleiding in de formele semantiek was published on January 1, 1988 in the journal Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft (volume 7, issue 2)
A Note on Transparency Postulates
This paper deals with the role of meaning postulates in Montague's theory of indirect interpretation. More specifically, it is concerned with the problem of finding suitable constraints on systems of postulates. One plausible candidate for such a constraint is discussed in some detail. It is a principle to the effect that the logical complexity of any meaning postulate must not exceed the expressive power of the natural language under description…
