Validation of the Fear of Intimacy Scale with a Lesbian and Gay Male Population
The present study investigated the validity of the Fear of Intimacy Scale (FIS) with lesbians and gay men. In addition, the relationship between fear of intimacy and adult attachment style was explored. The sample consisted of 40 lesbians and 57 gay men. The FIS evidenced high internal consistency. As with primarily heterosexual populations, fear of intimacy was shown to be negatively related to self-disclosure, comfort with emotional closeness, …
Fear of Intimacy Scale: Validation and Extension with Adolescents
This study was designed to validate the Fear-of-Intimacy Scale (FIS) (Descutner & Thelen, 1991) with an adolescent population, with reference to both the measure's original target, a dating partner (FIS-D) and a new target of the closest same-sex friend (FIS-F). High-school sophomores (158 males and 167 females) completed questionnaires pertaining to their relationships. Strong psychometric properties of both the FIS-D and FIS-F were evidenced in…
A preliminary prevention program for eating disorders in a junior high school population
Development and validation of a Fear-of-Intimacy Scale.
Two independent studies showed the Fear-of-Intimacy Scale (FIS) to be a valid and reliable measure of individuals' anxiety about close dating relationships

Interspousal Similarity: A New Approach to an Old Question
Married couples from the community were given the Couples Interaction Assessment (CIA) to determine the degree of interspousal similarity/dissimilarity. The CIA is a newly developed in vivo procedure in which the couples discuss predetermined situations. The discussions are recorded and later scored for occurrences of dominating and energizing responses, and for time of communicating. Analyses showed a significant positive correlation between spo…
The use of strategies and messages to alter aggressive interactions
Male and female college students were instigated to aggression by a confederate's shocks during a preliminary task. The confederate informed half of the treatment subjects of the response strategy which he intended to adopt. The other half received an irrelevant message. All subjects then competed against the confederate, who employed one of the following five response consequence strategies: a) set a maximum shock on all trials; b) set a minimum…

Imitation in the interest of social influence
This study appraises the possibility that imitation may be used as a means of social influence among fifth- and sixth-grade boys and girls. One member of each pair served as the model and the other as the subject. Subjects who were given an induction designed to motivate them to influence the model imitated the model significantly more than subjects who received no induction. Looking and smiling at the model was positively correlated with imitati…

Imitation of Self-Reward Standards by Black and White Female Delinquents
40 black and 40 white female delinquents observed a black or a white male model who employed liberal or stringent standards of self-reward. Even when given explicit normative information, Ss imitated the self-reward standards of the model. There were no differences in imitation as a function of S's race or model's race. Comparison with a comparable recent study showed that the black male delinquents imitated the white liberal male model more than…

Model's Race and s 's Race in Imitation of Cognitive and Motor Tasks
The influence of S's race, model's race, and type of task on imitation was assessed when a black model and a white model were juxtaposed such that imitation of one model precluded imitation of the other. The results showed no differential modeling as a function of S's race, the model's race or type of task under these experimental conditions. The white Ss showed a strong disposition to imitate the first modeled answer on the cognitive task, regar…
