Oscillating between the techniques of discipline and self: How Chinese policy papers on the digitalization of education subjectivize educators and the educated
This article investigates from the WPR approach how educational digitalization is discursively constructed in China by analysing how policy papers construct different kinds of subject positions for educators and the educated. The paper identifies non-coherences at two levels.First, digital technology is alternatively profiled as a solution and as a cause of problems.Second, the subjectivities ascribed to educational actors oscillate between opposi…
Agonistic memory as a relational concept: Remembering socialism in Lithuania
Based on a biographical narrative interview, this article analyzes the policies of discursive positioning enacted by Adele, a history teacher born in the Lithuanian countryside in 1951, while telling her life story. Showing how she consistently disrupts two rival narratives, the misalignments between which inform public debate in Lithuania’s divided memory culture, I interpret her account as a bottom-up example of agonistic memory. To date, this …

The Cold War in the Classroom: International Perspectives on Textbooks and Memory Practices

Translating globalization theories into educational research: Thoughts on recent shifts in Holocaust education
Much educational research on globalization aims to prepare students to be successful citizens in a global society. We propose a set of three concepts, drawing on systems theory (Nassehi, Stichweh) and theories of the subject (Butler, Foucault), to think the global which enables educational research to step back from hegemonic discourses and reflect on current practices. Globalization is understood in this approach as referring to: (1) a cognitive…
When is a Nation? Comparing Lithuania and Georgia
The article uses a constructivist reformulation of the question 'when is a nation?' as a parameter of comparison for the analysis of nationalist discourses on history in post-socialist Lithuania and Georgia. It shows that Lithuanian nationalists, by means of a critical reassessment of national history, described the nation as something that still had to be created, whereas Georgian nationalists referred to the unchallenged image of a glorious pas…
