  • Attract or repel

Open Access•Michal Gath-Morad, Pnina Plaut et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Design•2024

The paper presents a field study analysing how pedestrians walked for leisure purposes in a familiar urban area, and why they walked as they did. Using mobile-based GPS, the walking trajectories of 44 participants were recorded, followed by the administration of a post-walk survey. Results show that participants gravitated towards five distinct paths that were similar in length (three shorter and two longer paths), yet observably different with r…

  • Architectural design creativity in Multi-User Virtual Environment

Open Access•Seung Wan Hong, Ahmed El Antably et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2019

Previous studies have argued that a Multi-User Virtual Environment has the potential to foster creative collaboration, but empirical studies that examine this claim are rare. With a focus on architectural design, this study has investigated the affordance of Multi-User Virtual Environment for the production of novel and appropriate solutions in remote collaborative environments. Forty-four participants produced design solutions using Multi-User V…

  • Making a Liveable 'Place

Xiaolei Chen, Yehuda Kalay et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Heritage…•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This paper argues that designers of virtual environments must not only design the context of their worlds (as architects do) but also assume at least partial responsibility for designing the content (as filmmakers do). The design of a virtual environment is, therefore, a unique task that combines the traits of both architects and filmmakers, a fact that has often been overlooked by designers of virtual environments. Only by taking responsibility …

  • Architecture and the Internet

    Open Access•Yehuda E Kalay, Josef Marx et al.•ARTICLE•First Monday•2005

Cyberspace, as the information space is called, has become accessible in the past decade through the World Wide Web. And although it can only be experienced through the mediation of computers, it is quickly becoming an alternative stage for everyday economic, cultural, and other human activities. As such, there is a potential and a need to design it according to place–like principles. Making places for human inhabitation is, of course, what archi…
