  • Comercio y crecimiento en América Latina

Open Access•Juan Carlos Moreno Brid, Pérez Caldentey Esteban et al.•ARTICLE•Problemas del Desarrollo Revista…•2026

This article examines how trade liberalization in Latin America has failed to transform its productive structure or generate sustained growth. Exports remain concentrated in natural resources and low-value-added maquila production, while imports of capital goods reveal a “stunted industrialization” (Fajnzylber, 1983). The region faces an external constraint stemming from the balance of payments with deep structural roots: exports with weak intern…

  • The USMCA Review and the Mexican Economy

Open Access•Robert A Blecker, Juan Carlos Moreno Brid et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Policy•2025•References: 4

In the last decade of the twentieth century, the vast majority of economies moved toward opening their markets for goods and services, as well as capital. This opening—together with the curtailment of state intervention in the economic sphere and the prioritization in macroeconomic policy of fiscal prudence and low inflation—were hallmark features of the shift in the prevailing economic paradigm (Williamson 1990; Sachs et al. 2018). The drive tow…

Our results show that in most of the p…

  • Export competitiveness in an oil and gas economy

    Indira Romero-Márquez, Juan Carlos Moreno-Brid et al.•ARTICLE•CEPAL review•2016

The oil and gas sector has led the economy of Trinidad and Tobago since the late 1970s and, more pronouncedly, since 2000, accounting for a large share of gdp, total exports and tax revenue. Its prospects in the medium term could be negatively affected, however, if oil and gas extraction expands in other countries, and if the United States attains energy self-sufficiency. This paper offers an analysis of the evolution and competitiveness of its o…

The answer to the second question is discussed in the second part of this study. Also examined are the large number of short, …

M exico implemented drastic reforms in the mid‐1980s to open its markets to foreign competition and to reduce the state's intervention in the economy, but these reforms failed to ensure robust economic growth. The article explores myths and facts of th…

Since the mid-1980s Mexico has implemented a radical reorientation of its development strategy away from state - led industrialization and trade protection. This reform has drastically reduced the role of the state in the economy in favour of market mechanisms, and changed the orientation of social policies towards targeting and decentralization. The article examines the effects of this reform on Mexico's social and economic development, and find…

Therefore, it excludes the recent years of slowdown in the world economy, 2000-2002. The cointegration analysts supports the view that the external sector has been a key determinant of these countries’ long-run rate of economic growth. The article also suggests that the trade liberalization experien…
