Implicit discriminatory attitudes in surveys: Validation of the semantic affect misattribution procedure for dealing with social desirability in surveys
We examine the use of the Affect Misattribution Procedure (AMP) for assessing implicit or latent attitudes in the context of general population surveys. Specifically, we test and validate a Semantic AMP (SAMP) which uses words as primes rather than images. We suggest that the SAMP could be incorporated into the repertoire of experimental methods to be used in broad omnibus surveys to deal with social desirability bias. We discuss findings of an e…
Can Differing Occupational Class Positions Explain Migrant Health Inequalities? Differences in Trajectories of Subjective Health Between Migrants and Native Germans over Time
Migrants living in postindustrial countries are confronted with various socioeconomic challenges, including lower incomes, extended working hours, and lower occupational statuses than natives. Although health disparities linked to occupational positions have frequently been documented, they remain a relatively unexplored factor in the explanation of health gaps over time between migrants and native populations. To address this issue, we utilized …
Rehabilitating the Lagged Dependent Variable With Structural Equation Modeling
It has been argued that including the lagged dependent variable in panel models will open up unintended back-door paths and bias the estimates of the causal variable. We show that panel analysis in the structural equation modeling framework can get around this issue. Including the lagged dependent variable has the benefit of closing back-door paths due to some unobserved time-varying con-founders. We demonstrate this by looking at simulated data …
How Does Migration Background Affect Covid-19 Vaccination Intentions? A Complex Relationship Between General Attitudes, Religiosity, Acculturation and Fears of Infection
Objectives: The aim of the study is to investigate the relationship between migration background and COVID-19 vaccine intentions, exploring multiple mediation paths. We argue that the migrational and sociocultural background influences general attitudes toward health and political/public institutions. The effects of these general attitudes on vaccination intentions are mediated by fears of infection. Additionally, we analyze a migrant-only model …
Is the Effect of Environmental Attitudes on Behavior Driven Solely by Unobserved Heterogeneity
A large body of research exists investigating the link between environmental attitudes and behavior. Many empirical studies have found modest positive effects, suggesting that attitudes toward the environment might indeed influence environmental behavior. However, most of the previous empirical work is cross-sectional and correlational in nature. This means that the issue of the causal effect of environmental attitudes on behavior is far from set…
Overestimation of Covid-19 Vaccination Coverage in Population Surveys Due to Social Desirability Bias: Results of an Experimental Methods Study in Germany
In Germany, studies have shown that official coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination coverage estimated using data collected directly from vaccination centers, hospitals, and physicians is lower than that calculated using surveys of the general population. Public debate has since centered on whether the official statistics are failing to capture the actual vaccination coverage. The authors argue that the topic of one’s COVID-19 vaccinatio…

The dynamics of ethnocentrism in Europe. A comparison of enduring and emerging determinants of solidarity towards immigrants
This article examines cross-national differences in solidarity towards immigrants in the EU. This concept of solidarity is operationalized through perceived ethnic threat vs. a positive view of multicultural society. The main argument of this article is that ‘classical’ enduring determinants (sociodemographic factors, subjective values and structural factors) are still able to explain ethnocentrism, but these factors are enriched and mediated by …

Attitudes and behavioral intentions to protect the environment: How consistent is the structure of environmental concern in cross-national comparison
This article deals with the consistency of the attitudinal structure of environmental concern in cross-national comparison using structural equation models (SEM) with International Social Survey Program (ISSP) 2010 data. Multiple group confirmatory factor analysis is used to explore measurement invariance and to test the cross-national consistency of the relationship between environmental attitudes and the willingness to sacrifice for environment…
Two Worlds of Environmentalism
This article examines cross-cultural differences in the value cluster of environmentalism and postmaterialism. Based on an extension of Ronald Inglehart’s “objective problems–subjective values” hypothesis, we posit different sources of postmaterialism and environmental concern in wealthy versus poor countries. We test hypotheses on the relationship between national wealth, postmaterialist values, and environmental concern using empirical data fro…

Attitudes towards Muslims and fear of terrorism
This article looks at explanatory approaches of fear of terrorism. Until now, empirical studies looking at determinants of fear of terrorism have used the theoretical framework from the field of research regarding fear of crime. We argue that the cognitive link between terrorism and Islam is currently so strong that explanatory models should include measures of attitudes towards Muslims. On an argumentative level, the fear of crime theoretical fr…
Social Desirability and Undesirability Effects on Survey Response latencies
This article looks at paradata in the form of response latencies to identify socially desirable response behaviour. Response latencies are used as proxies to infer information processing modes. So far, evidence is conflicted as to whether socially desirable responding is indicated by shorter or longer response latencies. Our results show that faster responses are associated with the reporting of desirable attitudes and behaviour while slower resp…

Values, Beliefs, Attitudes: An Empirical Study on the Structure of Environmental Concern and Recycling Participation
Objectives Empirical studies on environmental behavior have been using a multitude of different operationalizations of environmental concern, which complicates cumulative research. In this article, we empirically explore the dimensionality of four environmental scales of different specificity, their interrelatedness, and their partial contribution to the explanation of recycling behavior. To facilitate the comparison of different studies, we inte…
