Cautions in using ChatGPT for qualitative thematic analysis: The case of social support in an internet forum for patients
Purpose Although ChatGPT was not originally designed for qualitative data analysis, it has recently garnered interest and discussion in this area due to its potential advantages. The use of ChatGPT in qualitative thematic analysis remains understudied. On these premises, the aim of this study was to use ChatGPT to re-analyze a textual dataset that was previously analyzed by human researchers using qualitative thematic analysis, allowing for a com…
Students' Intention to Leave University: The Protective Role of Social Connections
Reducing students' dropout rates represents an important issue for the academic system and the society that is far from being completely understood and solved. While it is largely demonstrated that the quality of university students' social connections significantly impacts their well‐being, its relationship with the decision to leave university is largely unexplored. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between specific variab…
Health anxiety and oppressive support: Their impact on decisions for non-urgent use of the emergency department of obstetrics and gynecology
The high number of non-urgent visits to the emergency departments of obstetrics and gynecology (EDOG) is receiving increasing attention from researchers and public health professionals. The decision to access the EDOG is the result of a decision-making process based on three phases, from the problem recognition to the intention to seek medical care, and the decision to visit the EDOG. Each stage may depend on different psychological and social fa…
Thinking of future as an older individual increases perceived risks for age‐related diseases but not for Covid‐19
Actively thinking of one's future as an older individual could increase perceived risk and risk aversion. This could be particularly relevant for COVID‐19, if we consider the common representation of the risk of being infected by COVID‐19 as associated with being older. Increased perceived risk could bear consequences on the adoption of preventive behaviours. Thus, we investigated whether increasing the salience of individuals' future as an older…

The words and the themes that characterized the participants' reports highlighted the impact of cancer diagnosis and oncological therapies on breast cancer survivors. The participation in the psychological intervention focused on self-compassion towards their body helps women to create an improved body perception
Together to Welcome, Together to Exclude: Intergroup Contact as an Antecedent of Collective and Interpersonal Behaviors Pro and Against Migrants
This preregistered study examined whether positive and negative intergroup contact with migrants relates to collective action supporting and opposing migrants as well as to interpersonal exclusion toward them via the key processes identified in the Social Identity Model of Collective Action. Structural equation models conducted on cross-sectional data from 506 Italian and English participants showed that positive (negative) contact related to hig…
The M-LED platform: Advancing electricity demand assessment for communities living in energy poverty
Globally about 800 million people live without electricity at home, over two thirds of which are in sub-Saharan Africa. Planning electricity access infrastructure and allocating resources efficiently requires a careful assessment of the diverse energy needs across space, time, and sectors. Because of data scarcity, most country or regional-scale electrification planning studies have however assumed a spatio-temporally homogeneous (top-down) poten…
To whom should I turn? Intergroup social connections moderate social exclusion's short- and long-term psychological impact on immigrants
Ghosting and orbiting: An analysis of victims' experiences
Ghosting is the practice of ending a relationship without explaining to the partner and avoiding any communication attempts. Orbiting is identical to ghosting, but the disengager still visibly follows the former partner on social media. Despite the increasing attention that ghosting and orbiting have gained in the popular press, they remain largely unexplored phenomena in scientific inquiry. In this work, we explored the psychological and behavio…
Evaluation of an Active Citizenship Intervention Based on Youth-Led Participatory Action Research
Youth-led participatory action research (YPAR) is a theoretical–methodological approach that has been designed to promote positive development (e.g., well-being and health, social–emotional and cognitive development, academic or career advancement) and civic engagement among young people. Although YPAR holds particular promise, there has been little systematic assessment of its effects. Moreover, no study has investigated the role of YPAR in the …
The dual path of the rejection (dis)identification model: A study on adolescents with a migrant background
Ethnic‐based rejection, especially when prolonged over time, can result in withdrawal (e.g., resignation) and antisocial (e.g., delinquent) behaviors. Rejection (dis)identification literature suggests that identification with the minority (ethnic) group and disidentification with the majority (national) group mediate the relationship between rejection and different dimensions of well‐being. Through secondary analyses of survey data from an intern…
Cross-border friendships and collective European identity: A longitudinal study
Cross-border mobility has long been seen as a mechanism to promote a collective political identity; however, the results of empirical studies on young people have been inconsistent. The present work extends previous research on the effect of cross-border mobility by considering the effect of cross-border friendships drawing on the intergroup contact theory of Allport as well as the common ingroup identity model of Gaertner and Dovidio. This longi…
The Problematic Support Scale: A validation among patients with systemic lupus erythematosus
The aim of the study was to develop and to assess the psychometric properties of the Problematic Support Scale, among patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. An online questionnaire was filled in by 344 systemic lupus erythematosus patients with a mean age of 39.66 years. Explorative factor analysis, later validated by confirmative factor analysis, showed the emergence of a two-factor structure in types of support provided: denying/uninformed…
Discriminatory Contexts, Emotions and Civic/Political Engagement among Native Italians and Migrants
We assume that emotions (anger, shame and hope) mediate the relationship between perceiving a discriminatory context and civic/political engagement. Results of a survey with 1242 participants (mean age 20.7 years; 53% men; 32.8% migrants) showed that such emotions play a different role according to the type of engagement and the population (native Italians versus migrants). The Motivating Role of Perceived Right Violation and Efficacy Beliefs in Identification with the Italian Water Movement
Because individuals' fundamental right to water is often taken for granted, little is known about why individuals participate in water activism. We examine how individuals identify with and intend to participate in the Italian Water Movement to defend the “public management” of water supply. Building on the collective‐action literature, we test an explanatory model in which the perceived violation of the right to water and group and participative…
The influence of knowing someone with HIV/Aids on preventive behaviors in Italy
The influence of knowing someone with HIV/AIDS on HIV preventive behaviors has become increasingly relevant in the literature, with controversial findings. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between knowing someone with HIV/AIDS and preventive behaviors in a representative sample of the Italian adult population. Drawing on two sociocognitive models, perceived threat and HIV/AIDS knowledge were proposed as mediators of this …
Psychosocial Predictors and HIV-Related Behaviors of Old Adults Versus Late Middle-Aged and Younger Adults

Sense of Community and Empowerment Among Young People: Understanding Pathways from Civic Participation to Social Well-Being
Civic participation in community life and within community organizations is generally considered as associated with positive outcomes for youth development and well-being. However, supportive empirical evidence on such benefits is still limited, as well as on the processes that may explain such positive outcomes. In this paper, we examined the impact of young people’s participation in different community and youth organizations on Social well-bei…
Sharing experiences and social support requests in an Internet forum for patients with systemic lupus erythematosus

All the posts (118) from an Italian forum for systemic lupus erythematosus patients were collected and analyzed combining qualitative content analysis wi…
Water as a Commons: An Exploratory Study on the Motives for Collective Action Among Italian Water Movement Activists
In many communities, supplying water and sanitation is a huge task, and the fact that these essential services can be carried out by the private sector is a debated issue. This article presents an exploratory study aimed to identify the range of motives for collective action shared by activists of the Italian Movement for ‘Public Water’. In‐depth interviews were conducted with 28 activists and were qualitatively analysed. Five main motivational c…
