The Robustness of Mental Accounting Across 21 Countries
First introduced four decades ago, the influential concept of mental accounting—how people mentally organize, evaluate, and track financial activities—posits that consumers often defy traditional economic rationality, treating money as non-fungible across discrete mental accounts. In this research, we present the first large-scale test of the replicability and generalizability of mental accounting effects, using a sample of 5,589 participants fro…
Engaging Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Africa
Universal Health Coverage (UHC) will not be achieved if health care worker shortages, estimated to increase to 18 million by 2030, are not addressed rapidly. Community-based health systems, which pivot to effective engagement of community health workers (CHW), may have an essential role in linking communities with health care facilities and reducing unmet health services needs caused by these shortages. The Canadian Red Cross (CRC) has partnered …
Access to adolescent sexual and reproductive health services in Accra, Ghana
Nearly 31% of the Ghanaian population are adolescents, and these populations persistently face high rates of teenage pregnancies and unsafe abortions. This is despite sexual and reproductive health (SRH) being taught in the school curriculum. In this qualitative study, we explore the factors affecting adolescents' access to, and experiences of, SRH services in Accra, Ghana. We conducted 12 focus group discussions (FGDs) with adolescents and 13 ke…
Healthcare provider cost of antimicrobial resistance in two teaching hospitals in Ghana
Understanding the healthcare provider costs of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in lower-middle-income countries would motivate healthcare facilities to prioritize reducing the AMR burden. This study evaluates the extra length of stay and the associated healthcare provider costs due to AMR to estimate the potential economic benefits of AMR prevention strategies. We combined data from a parallel cohort study with administrative data from the partici…
Cost comparison of a rapid results initiative against standard clinic-based model to scale-up voluntary medical male circumcision in Kenya
Voluntary male medical circumcision (VMMC) reduces HIV acquisition by up to 60%. Kenya has successfully scaled up VMMC to an estimated 91% of eligible men and boys in certain regions in combination due to VMMC and cultural circumcisions. VMMC as a program is implemented regionally in traditionally non-circumcising counties where the prevalence is still below 91%, ranging from 56.4% to 66.7%. Given that funding toward VMMC is expected to decline i…
Uptake and perceptions of oral HIV self-testing delivered by village health teams among men in Central Uganda
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends HIV self-testing (HIVST) to increase access to and utilization of HIV services among underserved populations. We assessed the uptake and perceptions of oral HIVST delivered by Village Health Teams (VHTs) among men in a peri-urban district in Central Uganda. We used a concurrent parallel mixed methods study design and analyzed data from 1628 men enrolled in a prospective cohort in Mpigi district, Cent…
Do national health insurance schemes guarantee financial risk protection in the drive towards Universal Health Coverage in West Africa? A systematic review of observational studies
To facilitate the drive towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) several countries in West Africa have adopted National Health Insurance (NHI) schemes to finance health services. However, safeguarding insured populations against catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) and impoverishment due to health spending still remains a challenge. This study aims to describe the extent of financial risk protection among households enrolled under NHI schemes in …
Alarming Levels of Multidrug Resistance in Aerobic Gram-Negative Bacilli Isolated from the Nasopharynx of Healthy Under-Five Children in Accra, Ghana
Nasopharyngeal carriage of aerobic Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) may precede the development of invasive respiratory infections. We assessed the prevalence of nasopharyngeal carriage of aerobic GNB and their antimicrobial resistance patterns among healthy under-five children attending seven selected day-care centres in the Accra metropolis of the Greater Accra region of Ghana from September to December 2016. This cross-sectional study analysed a to…
Pattern of Antimicrobial Susceptibility and Antimicrobial Treatment of Neonates Admitted with Suspected Sepsis in a Teaching Hospital in Ghana, 2021
Neonatal sepsis is a life-threatening emergency, and empirical antimicrobial prescription is common. In this cross-sectional study of neonates admitted with suspected sepsis in a teaching hospital in Ghana from January-December 2021, we described antimicrobial prescription patterns, compliance with national standard treatment guidelines (STG), blood culture testing, antimicrobial resistance patterns and treatment outcomes. Of the 549 neonates adm…
Sepsis among Neonates in a Ghanaian Tertiary Military Hospital
In this study, we described the bacterial profile, antibiotic resistance pattern, and laboratory result turnaround time (TAT) in neonates with suspected sepsis from a tertiary-level, military hospital in Accra, Ghana (2017-2020). This was a cross-sectional study using secondary data from electronic medical records. Of 471 neonates clinically diagnosed with suspected sepsis in whom blood samples were collected, the median TAT from culture request …
Trends and antecedents of inequalities in maternal healthcare coverage in four African countries
Using data between 2003 and 2016, this paper assesses the degree and evolution of socio‐economic inequalities in maternal health outcomes in four African countries. The study measures the trends of socio‐economic inequalities in maternal healthcare and assesses the sources of socio‐economic inequalities in maternal health through a decomposition approach. We find cross‐country differences in the evolution of maternal healthcare inequalities. Rwan…
Strategies for financing social health insurance schemes for providing universal health care
The ability for Social Health Insurance programs to cover all groups has been limited in the selected countries. Hence, relying solely on social health insurance schemes to achieve Universal Health Coverage may not be plausible in Africa. Also, highly fragmented risk pools impede efforts to widen the insurance pools and promote cross-subsidies
Assessing the determinants and drivers of multidimensional energy poverty in Ghana
Malaria care seeking behavior of individuals in Ghana under the NHIS
Overall, for malaria care the uninsured are more likely to choose informal care compared to the insured for the treatment of malaria
Quality of uncomplicated malaria case management in Ghana among insured and uninsured patients
Adherence to the standard protocol of malaria treatment is low. This is especially the case for parasitological confirmation of all suspected malaria patients before treatment with an antimalarial as currently recommended for the effective management of malaria in the country. The results show that about 16 percent of total sample were parasitologically tested. Effective management of the disease demands proper diagnosis and treatment and therefo…
