This study aimed to describe the functioning of the food aid system during South Africa’s Covid-19 response. We conducted a mixed-methods study from August 2020 to January 2021 in South Africa. Open Access•Sabrina Lynette Thomas, Samantha Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2023

The commercial gambling industry has become one of the most innovative health-harming industries of recent times. New digital technologies and affordable internet have enabled the rapid transformation of this industry and its ability to offer many high-intensity gambling products across the world (Akanle and Fageyinbo, 2019). These are readily accessible in land-based venues and online via mobile devices which are constantly available 24 hours a …

    Open Access•Agnes Erzse, Teurai Rwafa-Ponela et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Our study demonstrates how public engagement can facilitate the incorporation of community values and programmatic preferences into nutrition priority setting, enabling a responsive approach to local community needs, especially in resource constrained contexts. Findings could guide policy makers to facilitate more appropriate decisions and to improve nutrition in the first 1000 days of life

  • Essential health services delivery in South Africa during Covid-19

    Open Access•Samanta Tresha Lalla‐Edward, Samanta T Lalla-Edward et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Background: Between May 2020 and February 2022, South Africa's health system bore strain as it battled mitigating the coronavirus pandemic. The country's pandemic response was scrutinized. This period also brought into focus pre-existing shortcomings in the healthcare system and its governing bodies. Contextually, there is a paucity in literature on the experiences of healthcare providers and users. This study aimed to contribute information on C…

  • We Were Afraid”

    Open Access•Teurai Rwafa-Ponela, Jessica Price et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

The impacts of pandemics are recognized to go beyond infection, physical suffering, and socio-economic disruptions. Other consequences include psychological responses. Using a mental wellbeing lens, we analyzed COVID-19-related stressors in healthcare workers (HCWs) and community members who provided and regularly accessed health services in South Africa, respectively. From February to September 2021, during the second COVID-19 wave we conducted …

  • HIV non-testing, perpetration of violence against women, and sexual risk-behaviour

    Open Access•Teurai Rwafa-Ponela, Ruari‐santiago Mcbride et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2021

Despite HIV testing having improved globally, men remain disproportionately less likely to test for HIV. While violence against women (VAW) and HIV risk have a strong association among women, few studies explore men around VAW perpetration, risky-sexual behaviour, and HIV testing. Males aged 18-42 years were recruited from a peri-urban settlement near Johannesburg, South Africa. Data were from an endline of a trial. We used logistic regression to…

  • Organizational structure and human agency within the South African health system

Open Access•Teurai Rwafa-Ponela, Jane Goudge et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2021

Despite international recognition of health promotion (HP) as a cost-effective way to improve population health, it is not highly regarded nor is it sufficiently institutionalized in many health systems. This diminishes its ability to deliver on its public health promises. This paper examined the role of organizational structure and human agency within the South African health system (drawing on Giddens’s structuration theory) in determining the …

  • Relationship power and HIV sero-status

    Open Access•Teurai Rwafa-Ponela, Simukai Shamu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Background: HIV disproportionately infects women in many regions. Zimbabwe is one of the countries, most heavily affected. Unequal gender power relations between men and women can increase women's vulnerability to HIV. The aim of this paper was to determine the relationship between gender power and HIV sero-status among postpartum women in Zimbabwe. Methodology: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2042 women aged 15-49 years, attending p…
