Diversification and transition in French Alpine resorts
Alpine resorts in France experienced a sharp drop in visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic although, subsequently, they have largely recovered. However, this downturn in activity provided the opportunity to reflect on a series of underlying structural issues affecting the long-term viability of such resorts. Diversification has become a key element of development strategies, as has the need to engage in a ‘tourism transition’
Reviewing a book on « Contemporary issues in tourism » at a time when the prevalence of Covid-19 throughout the world is causing widespread disruption to tourist activities and an almost complete halt to international travel is not without its challenges. This is particularly the case as this text was written before the emergence of these problems and quite naturally considers many of the numerous aspects of the growth and development of tourism …
‘Le Tourisme en France’, published in 2021 by iSTE Editions, is the 5th book in a collection specifically devoted to tourism studies. It comprises two volumes, the first entitled ‘A global approach’ and the second ‘A regional approach’. In total this represents 493 pages of text, providing a comprehensive analysis of tourism in mainland France and in its overseas territories. The four authors are all recognised specialists in the study of tourism…
The History and Geography of a Forgotten Olympic Project
This article concerns the project put forward in the late 1980s to create a third type of Olympic Games in the French Pyrenees. The idea consisted of organizing a gathering for new outdoor sports (climbing, mountain biking, rafting, canyoning, hang gliding, paragliding, skateboarding, etc) designed as a third Olympic event: the Spring Games (the Jeux de Printemps in French). The whole project was entitled: Pyrénées: Laboratoire de l'Olympisme (li…
Recent Developments in Alpine Tourism
The article presents recent trends in the tourist economy in the Alpine region. With reference to the development cycle of the tourist product, proposed by Butler, the author claims that the Alpine tourist centres have already reached the maturity stage. Their further development requires active intervention in order to refresh the tourist product. Further in the article, a variety of tourist development strategies have been presented, which migh…
After Les Minguettes
Policy Review Section
In this issue of the Policy Review Section, Keith Shaw of the Department of Economics and Government, University of Northumbria at Newcastle, drawing on experience in the North East of England examines the value of the “urban growth coalition” model and the concept of “new urban corporatism” in explaining the power structure underlying contemporary urban regeneration strategies. In the second Article, John Tuppen of the Department of Economics, É…

A Geographical Appraisal of Transfrontier Commuting in Western Europe
Despite the restrictions which political boundaries may place upon movement, daily international transfers of labor have increased substantially in Western Europe since the early 1960s. The phenomenon is particularly intense in the French border region of Alsace from which, in 1976, over 27,000 frontaliers moved to work in either Western Germany or Switzerland. Workers are generally young and possess only limited qualifications; they appear stron…
