  • Conversation Analysis and Meetings

    Open Access•Birte Asmuß•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2026

Meetings have traditionally been dealt with as preplanned, ordered organizational events, in line with Schwartzman's definition of a meeting as “a communicative event involving three or more people who agree to assemble for a purpose ostensibly related to the functioning of an organization or a group” (1989, p. 7). As a response to this rather functionalistic view, an increased focus on interaction in meetings has developed in recent years. Coore…

  • Complaining About Others at Work

Johanna Ruusuvuori, Birte Asmuß et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Language and Social…•2019•Cited by: 15•References: 14

The article investigates the interactional work required to launch a complaint about nonpresent third parties in discussions between employees and their manager. The study shows how the complaint recipient (the manager) creates opportunities for the complainer (the employee) to complain, and how the recipient and complainer collaboratively facilitate entry into complaining by means of building joint epistemic access and affective stance toward th…

This special section builds upon Deirdre Boden’s work on the constitutive nature of talk for organizations and the Culture & Organization 2004 special issue that developed her concern. Specifically, we aim to further engage with how business is managed, formed and locally accomplished by means of the organizational surroundings that the participants make themselves part of and the multimodal resources that they have at their disposal, in other wo…

    Open Access•Birte Asmuß, Sae Oshima•ARTICLE•Discourse Studies•2012•Cited by: 21•References: 25

Meetings are complex institutional events at which participants recurrently negotiate institutional roles, which are oriented to, renegotiated, and sometimes challenged. With a view to gaining further understanding of the ongoing negotiation of roles at meetings, this article examines one specific recurring feature of meetings: the act of proposing future action. Based on microanalysis of video recordings of two-party strategy meetings, the study…

  • Negotiating meaning in narratives

    Susanne Kjaerbeck, Birte Asmuß•ARTICLE•Narrative Inquiry•2005•Cited by: 6

In this article we focus on the negotiation of meaning in narratives. One crucial place for the negotiation of meaning in narratives is its punchline and the sequence it precedes, the post punchline sequence. We will study in detail the interactional construction of the punchline and of the post punchline in institutional talk and private everyday conversation. In our material these activities are systematically examined in a two-step procedure: …
