Sibling Violence Victimization in Adolescence and Intimate Partner Violence in Emerging Adulthood
The association between sibling ambivalence and well-being in older adulthood
Family scholarship has documented negative associations between ambivalence and well-being in the context of parent-adult child relationships. As sibling ties remain salient throughout later life, ambivalence experienced in sibling relationships might also be related to older adult well-being. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between sibling ambivalence and both psychological and physical well-being of older adults, as we…
Sibling relationships in older adulthood
4.58) on average. Participants provided self-report data about their relationships and well-being. Results showed that older adults reported high levels of sibling warmth and low levels of sibling conflict and parental favoritism. Sister-sister pairs had warmer sibling relationships than other gender-compositions. Sibling conflict and parental favoritism were positively associated with symptoms of depression, anxiety, hostility, and loneliness. S…
Sibling Relationships in Adulthood
Sibling relationships, the longest‐lasting relationships in most people's lives, have been understudied compared to other family relationships. The goal of this review is to increase understanding of sibling relationships from midlife to older adulthood by integrating aspects of psychological and sociological theories, including social exchange, family systems, and life course perspectives, to better understand the structure, function, processes,…
Associations between Siblings' Differential Family Experiences and Differences in Psychological Adjustment
The goal of this paper was to further our understanding of adolescents' adjustment by studying multiple components of siblings' unique family environments using the difference score methodology. Self-report data about marital conflict, parent-child h
Sibling socialization
Stressful life events and experiences may disrupt the typical day-to-day interactions between sisters and brothers that provide the foundation of sibling socialization. This chapter examines four experiences that may affect patterns of sibling interaction: parental marital conflict, parental divorce and remarriage, foster care placement, and a sibling's developmental disability. We propose a model to guide future research on sibling socialization…
Family Emotional Processes and Adolescents' Adjustment
This study examined associations between parents' emotion coaching and emotional expressiveness, and adolescents' internalizing and externalizing symptoms. The sample included 131 16‐year‐olds and their mothers and fathers. Adolescents completed an open‐ended interview about their parents' emotion coaching. Adolescents rated parents' negative emotional expressiveness, and parents and adolescents reported on adolescents' adjustment. Results indica…
Marital Conflict and Children's Adjustment
The associations between marital conflict, maternal and paternal hostility, children's interpretations of marital conflict, and children's adjustment were examined in a sample of 136 school‐aged children and their parents. Observational measures were collected from videotapes of marital interaction and family interaction. Self‐report data were collected from parents and children. Results showed that mothers’ and fathers’ hostility mediated the as…
Sibling relationships in early adulthood.
The purposes of this study were to describe the nature of sibling relationships in young adulthood and to examine correlates of individual differences in adults' sibling relationships. A new measure, the Adult Sibling Relationship Questionnaire (ASRQ; R. P. Lanthier & C. Stocker, 1992), was developed with 2 samples (N = 383). The factor structure of the ASRQ indicated that sibling relationships in early adulthood were characterized by 3 independe…
Marital Satisfaction and Maternal Emotional Expressiveness
Associations between marital quality, maternal emotional expressiveness and children's sibling relationships were examined in a sample of 64 seven‐year‐olds and their mothers. Mothers reported on the quality of their marital relationships, and children rated the quality of their sibling relationships. Mothers and children provided data on maternal emotional expressiveness. Results indicated that marital dissatisfaction was associated with hostile…

The Factorial Structure of the Sibling Relationship Inventory (SRI) in American and Dutch Samples
The psychometric properties of the Sibling Relationship Inventory (SRI; Stocker & McHale, 1992) were examined in two independent samples. One consisted of 206 American children aged 6-12 years, the other of 452 Dutch children aged 5-12 years. A factorial structure with three dimensions (affection, hostility, rivalry) was demonstrated. The internal consistency of the SRI scales proved adequate, even for relatively young children, aged 6-9 years. T…
Genetic and environmental influences on maternal and sibling interaction in middle childhood
Genetic and environmental influences on maternal and sibling interactions were examined in 67 mother-child-child triads from nonadoptive families and 57 mother-child-child triads from adoptive families (in which both children were adopted and genetically unrelated). Triads were videotaped in 6 play settings in their homes. In addition, each sibling pair was observed in an unstructured setting in the home, and mothers completed an interview about …
The Nature and Family Correlates of Preadolescents' Perceptions of their Sibling Relationships
Preadolescents' perceptions of their sibling relationships and links between sibling and parent-child relationships were examined in 103 families. In home interviews, mothers, fathers and both first- and second-born children rated their family relationships, and, in a series of seven daily telephone interviews, first-borns reported on how much time they spent in dyadic activities with each parent. Both first-borns' and second-borns' behavior towa…
