  • Seeking the cosmopolitan teacher

Paul Tarc, James Budrow et al.•ARTICLE•Teachers and Teaching•2025•References: 35

This paper takes the trans-nationalising conditions of global mobilities, hyper-connectivity and super-diversity as bases for the internationalisation of teacher education (ITE) curricula and for ‘seeking the cosmopolitan teacher.’ We ground our conception of the cosmopolitan teacher in one novel Canadian exemplar of ITE in which we participate as curriculum developers and teacher educators. In the literature on ITE we find an overlapping set of …

  • Upholding “the educational” in education

Open Access•Paul Tarc, Aparna Mishra Tarc et al.•ARTICLE•Prospects•2024

This article argues that schooling’s driving purpose should be to educate . Given heightening global crises and the potential of education to respond, we agree with the spirit and focus of UNESCO’s (2021) A new social contract for education intervention. Education/schooling should be motivated by progressive, critical visions to contribute to more sustainable and just human and planetary futures. Embodied-affective-cognitive technologically-media…

  • Challenges and possibilities in English language learning of rural lower-class Chinese college students

Xi Wu, Paul Tarc•ARTICLE•Journal of Multilingual and…•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 32

Given the widened access to Chinese higher education, a large proportion of students studying at Chinese colleges come from rural lower-class families and encounter different challenges in English language learning. By using Bourdieu’s social theoretical lenses, this case study explores how the interplay of capital, habitus and social fields affected ten rural lower-class college students’ English language learning. This study finds that these st…

  • Transnational governing for the pedagogical ideals of K-12 international education

    Paul Tarc•ARTICLE•Educational Review•2022

In 2018, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) added to their PISA regime the assessment of “global competence”. Given this novel, data-driven approach to governing the internationalisation of K-12 education, this study compares this recent intervention to a longer-standing mode of governing for the pedagogical ideals of international education – the approach of the International Baccalaureate (IB) across its 50-year li…

  • How might IB classroom pedagogy ‘make a better world?’ (Toward) illuminating a promising IBDP teacher praxis

Justine Lyons, John Lyons et al.•ARTICLE•Globalisation Societies and…•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 6

Moving beyond both a neoliberal as well as a ‘heroic’ conception of how the International Baccalaureate (IB) might ‘make a better world’, this paper focuses on the transformative potentiality of IBDP classroom pedagogy from the perspective of an experienced and critically minded educator, whose praxis has evolved across more than three decades of teaching IBDP courses in elite, well-established international schools around the world. In the IBDP …

  • Chinese international secondary school students as flexible citizens

    Open Access•Xi Wu, Paul Tarc•ARTICLE•Discourse Studies in the Cultural…•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 28

Guided by the notion of ‘flexible citizenship’, as a strategy to accumulate and exchange different forms of capital across national borders, our ethnographic study followed eleven Chinese international secondary school students’ transnational lives. This paper is focused on how instrumental goals of flexible citizenship cover over the emotional and existential qualities of these youths’ lives. To orient this concern, we turn to Rizvi’s conception…

  • Chinese international students in a Canadian private secondary school

    Xi Wu, Paul Tarc•ARTICLE•Compare A Journal of Comparative…•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 7

This study employs the notion of ‘flexible citizenship,’ to examine how national and transnational forces and discursive logics mediate Chinese international secondary school students’ educational routes and life trajectories. It draws upon a larger ethnographic research programme that followed 11 Chinese students in a Canadian international secondary school across a period of 14 months. Our current findings affirm that neoliberal logics mediated…

  • Anglo-Western international school teachers as global middle class

Open Access•Paul Tarc, Aparna Mishra Tarc et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse Studies in the Cultural…•2019•Cited by: 7•References: 29

This exploratory study on the global middle class (GMC) examines three representative experiences of the tens of thousands of Anglo-Western international schoolteachers (ISTs), who teach in private, K-12, English-immersion international schools for extended periods of time. The notion of GMC provokes consideration of social class making and forms of belonging of professional and managerial service workers who are ‘middling actors’ in the flows of…

  • Walking the Talk”

    Paul Tarc•ARTICLE•Peabody Journal of Education•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 31

In many of the most highly regarded international schools, international mindedness (IM) represents an overarching value orientation and a “mindset” to be developed in students. Over the last 2 decades, there has been increasing attention to both understanding and supporting IM in the explicit and formal curriculum in international schools; however, the theorization of the more implicit or hidden curriculum of international schools has been much …

The elite international school is a rich site for sociological inquiry in global times. In this paper, we conceptualize the international school as a transnational space of agonist social class-making given the dynamic positioning of the complement of international school actors. We position international schoolteachers in the middle of these interactions and suggest that the middle position gives much-needed insight into the complex and relation…
