  • Ignoring distractors takes its (memory) toll

Open Access•Andrea Dissegna, Leonardo Chelazzi et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition•2026

Effective attentional selection requires filtering task-irrelevant stimuli. We examined the cognitive cost of such filtering using an object-based attention paradigm across four experiments (N = 320). Participants discriminated the orientation of a Gabor patch presented either alone or overlapped with an irrelevant object or scrambled stimulus. The filtering cost was measured as an increase in response times on distractor-absent trials embedded i…

  • Attentional capture in emotion comparison is orientation independent

Open Access•Giulio Baldassi, Mauro Murgia et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Research•2023

Recent findings on emotion comparison show a typical pattern of motor reactivity rising from attentional capture. When pairs of emotional faces are presented simultaneously, the most intense emotional face is recognized faster (Emotional Semantic Congruency—ESC effect). Furthermore, a global response speed advantage for emotional pairs with positive rather than negative average emotion intensity is observed (i.e., emotional size effect), with the…

  • Gastrointestinal Disorders and Food Selectivity

Open Access•Giulia Bresciani, Prisca Da Lozzo et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

The aim of this study was to evaluate the interaction between gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, sleep problems, and challenging behaviors in children with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their effect on parental stress. The secondary objective was to assess the frequency and type of GI and feeding disorders in a sample of children with ASD through a multidisciplinary assessment and, finally, to investigate families' perceptions a…

  • Short-Term Outcomes of an ESDM Intervention in Italian Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder following the Covid-19 Lockdown

Open Access•Raffaella Devescovi, Giulia Bresciani et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a temporary lockdown period in Italy, during which the delivery of in-person treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in public health services was discontinued. This occurrence represented a crucial challenge for both families and professionals. We assessed the short-term outcomes of a sample of 18 children who received an early intervention with the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), delivered at low…
