Greek in Minoritized Contexts
From ethnography to performance
The current paper presents the recontextualization process of ethnographic narratives collected during the five-year research project GRECO ‘Language and identity among Romeika speakers in Cyprus’, into a participatory performance at the Nicosia Buffer Fringe Performing Arts Festival 2019. The project focused on the narratives of Romeika speakers, a sub-group of Turkish Cypriots who had Greek and not Turkish as a home language. The paper focuses …
Language Contact and Borders among Pontic Greek and Cypriot Greek in Karpasia, Cyprus
The current paper explores language contact between two Greek varieties, Pontic Greek and Cypriot Greek, in the northern part of Cyprus. After the de facto partition of Cyprus in 1974, several Pontic Greek-speaking communities were transplanted from their homeland in Trabzon to the peninsula of Karpasia in northern Cyprus. These "newcomers" or "immigrants" or "settlers" were brought from Turkey after the displacement of the Greek Cypriot populati…
Disability-related bullying and its discursive formations and enactments in the social ecology of schooling
The study uses teachers’ interview narratives to explore the relationship between childhood disability and bullying. Drawing insights from literature on childhood, critical disability studies and stigma-based perspectives on bullying, the latter is reconceptualised as being a socially mediated phenomenon, which is not only experienced by children – as either victims or perpetrators – but also as being constituted by them and their lived experienc…
Young children performing linguistic varieties
This study examines young speakers’ language use in the bidialectal context of Cyprus. It focuses on children’s language use of their two language varieties, namely Standard Modern Greek and Cypriot Greek, and how they are being socialised to use these two varieties in the classroom environment and at home. The data collected from kindergarten formal education and the home environment via observations and voice recordings suggest that children so…
Classroom communities, language choices and accessibility to discourse
The paper reports on the results of a case study of a Year 9 class in a multilingual urban school. The study investigates issues of negotiation, accessibility and (legitimacy of) rights in the classroom’s dominant discourse and more specifically the ways in which the Year 9 students of a Private English School in Cyprus negotiate their identity through language choices and interaction in class. Focus is placed on choices or interactions that shap…
Literacy education in prison
The current paper presents data from a social literacy programme implemented in the prison school in Cyprus for 18 months. The programme was theoretically informed by critical literacy, genre pedagogy, multimodality and non-formal education and it aimed to opt away from skill-based, autonomous and corrective models of literacy education that are widespread in prison education. The current programme approached literacy from the ideological and soc…

Language policy in Greek Cypriot education
The paper looks at developments in Greek language curricula in Cyprus during three periods: (1) the post-independence era from 1960 to the partition of the island in 1974; (2) the post-partition era from 1974 to 2003; and (3) the contemporary era, including the accession of Cyprus to the European Union in 2004, and the introduction of a new Greek curriculum in 2010. The paper seeks to document the tensions between national values associated with …
