    Simone de Beauvoir (1908–1986) is perhaps best known today as the author of the path‐breaking study Le Deuxième sexe [ The Second Sex ], published in 1949, and as an icon of postwar French feminism. Yet Beauvoir's impressive intellectual ability to diagnose and write about women's status in The Second Sex had far‐reaching consequences for the study of social power structures and institutions beyond her time and place in postwar France.
