Spongiform encephalopathy, cannibalism and Neanderthals extinction
A research project on the peopling of Sicily (Trinacria project)
The selective advantage of cystic fibrosis heterozygotes tested by aDNA analysis
Recently a heterozygote advantage was suggested to explain the high incidence (1:25 carrier individuals in Europeans) of the cystic fibrosis gene. This selective advantage was speculated to be due to a high resistance to chloride-secreting diarrhea, including cholera. Up to now the major efforts to test directly this hypothesis have been limited to animal models. We propose to verify the hypothesis directly on a sample of human individuals who di…
Genetic aspects in hominid evolution
Paleobiology of Etruscan populations
For an operative definition of anthropology in the European universities
For some years the present document on the operative definition of anthropology and its subdisciplines has been circulating and has been discussed among members of the European Anthropological Association. The document is now available for consideration and use of the readers of theInternational Journal of Anthropology
Dental anthropology and paleodemography of the precolumbian populations of hispaniola from the third millennium B.C. to the Spanish conquest
Socio-biological basis of “power” in man
The difference between individual aggressive behaviour and group violence is discussed. While individual aggressive behaviour has a biological background and has evolutionary significance for the survival of the individual and the species, group violence, like human character, is due to cultural imprinting and is against the survival of both individuals and populations (war)
Research on olfactory perception of biologically relevant substances in a sample of school-children, aged from 6 to 14 years
This study is part of an extensive research program on pheromones aiming to analyze in depth and on a wide scale man's olfaction and its ability to distinguish pheromone-like substances either of male and female origin, as well as the evolution of such ability at different physiological stages during his life. Olfaction tests were conducted on a group of 1318 school children (aged 6 to 14) by mean of “Biologically relevant” substances. Younger ma…

Banded karyotypes of 20 Papionini species reveal no necessary correlation with speciation
The G‐banded karyotypes of 20 species of the tribe Papionini are remarkably similar, and the amount of phylogenetic interpretation permitted is limited. The genera Mandrillus and Cercocebus may be linked by a derived chromosome 10. T. gelada may be linked to the macaques by chromosome 2. Chromosome 5, which differs in M. fascicularis , makes this species an unlikely ancestor of the Sulawesi (Celebes) macaques. An alternate hypothesis, which takes…
“La Isabela». The first seven years (1493–1500) of the European colonization of America
In the present note an outline of the project and of the cooperation established with the Museum of the Hombre Dominicano is outlined
The excavations of La Isabela, the first European city of the New World
In the present note the author presents history of the discovery and of the status of the excavation of the site La Isabela, the first settlement planned by Columbus in the New World during his second trip to America in the summer of 1493
Anthropology in contemporary Europe
Based upon his concluding remarks, presented at the Fifth European Congress of Anthropology in September 1986, the President of the European Anthropological Association reports on contemporary European approaches to the science of man

On Natural Selection and the Inheritance of Wealth [and Comments and Reply]
Greater reproductive variance among males than among females is presented as a component of natural selection's influence in determining preferential treatment of males in the inheritance of wealth. In conjunction, the transmission of sex chromosomes and their attendant probabilities of carrying genes identical by descent are traced for several generations in order to illustrate a male bias in species whose male sex is heterogametic (XY) while th…

Caryology and taxonomy of the Catarrhine monkeys
The number and the morphology of chromosomes are a characteristic of the species. Knowledge of the mechanisms of chromosome breakage and rearrangement offers the possibility of understanding caryotype evolution. On the basis of this knowledge, we can trace the phylogeny and organize the taxonomy of a group of living forms. In the present paper, the available data on the number and morphology of the chromosomes of the Catarrhine monkeys have been …
A comparison of the fluorescent karyotypes of the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) and man
Demographic data on the remains of ancient Egyptians
