Exploring Effects of a Nostalgic Storytelling Virtual Reality Experience Beyond Hedonism
In this study, we tested the effect of a nostalgic storytelling virtual reality (VR) experience (vs. a text-reading neutral VR experience as the comparison condition) on state-level eudaimonic well-being and explored the underlying mediating mechanisms. In a within-subject experimental design, all 31 participants experienced both versions of the VR in pseudorandomized and counterbalanced order. Compared with the text-reading VR experience, the no…
Gifting in Museums: Using Multiple Time Orientations to Heighten Present-Moment Engagement
HCI has recently increased its interest in the domains of museums and gifting. The former is often oriented primarily towards the past, while the latter is often oriented towards the future, in terms of anticipating the receiver’s reactions. Our article provides a sustained and well-evidenced new theoretical framework on the role of time-orientation on the design of forward-oriented (gifting) experiences in past-oriented (museum) settings. This T…

Performance, Theatre, and Drama
This year’s review is divided into four sections: 1. Introduction; 2. The 21st Century (which looks at two texts, one targeting drama and the other targeting theatre and performance); 3. Getting Involved (views two recent publications that bring new perspectives to bear on immersion and participation); 4. Pushing Forwards (considers two texts that rethink the inclusive concept of performance as it stands today and project that inclusivity into th…

Performance and …
In entitling our chapter ‘Performance and ...’ our intention is not to privilege performance studies over theatre studies or drama, but rather to call attention to the longstanding proposition that performance (studies) ‘resists or rejects definition’ (Richard Schechner, ‘What Is “Performance Studies” Anyway?’, in P. Phelan and J. Lane (eds), The Ends of Performance (NYUP [1998]), p. 360) and as such, highlight the potential it holds for interdis…
Now, where was I? negotiating time in digitally augmented autobiographical performance
This article examines the complex interplay of past, present and future in the unfolding moment of performance of digitally augmented autobiographical storytelling. Performers of autobiography, whether on stage or in everyday life, engage in a practice of identity construction in the dynamic and shifting moment of performance. This requires a negotiation with unstable memories, photographic traces and the responses of the co-present audience. The …
