  • Knowledge of pulse oximetry, indications for oxygen therapy, and integrated management of childhood illness among health care workers in Nigerian primary and secondary health facilities

Open Access•Ayobami A Bakare, Olumide Ebenezer Olufayo et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Background The WHO’s Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) strategy aims to reduce deaths among children under the age of five. Pulse oximetry, a simple non-invasive method for measuring peripheral oxygen saturation - an indicator of severe illness, can enhance IMCI implementation. In Nigeria, despite efforts to incorporate pulse oximetry into IMCI, its adoption is sub-optimal. We assessed healthcare workers’ (HCWs) knowledge of pulse…

  • Study protocol for a pilot quasi-experimental study on oral health education for nurses and community health workers in Nigeria

Open Access•Abimbola Oladayo, Abimbola M Oladayo et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Introduction: The primary health care system provides an ideal setting for the integration of oral health into general health care as well as equitable access to oral health care. However, the limited oral health knowledge of primary health care workers necessitates appropriate training before they can participate in health promotion efforts. This pilot training was designed to examine the impact of the Oral Health Education module for Nurses and…

  • Covid-19 knowledge and practices in Jigawa State, Nigeria

Open Access•Julius Salako, Damola Bakare et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Population knowledge of COVID-19 and adherence to prevention measures may not be equitably distributed, limiting the success of public health measures. We aimed to understand whether COVID-19 knowledge differed by socio-economic status in a rural low-income setting of Jigawa State, Nigeria. We conducted a secondary analysis of the baseline cross-sectional survey of the INSPIRING cluster randomised controlled trial in Kiyawa Local Government Area,…

  • Pneumonia knowledge and care seeking behavior for children under-five years in Jigawa, Northwest Nigeria

Open Access•Ayobami A Bakare, Carina King et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Background: Between 2013 and 2022, Nigeria did not meet globally defined targets for pneumonia control, despite some scale-up of vaccinations, oxygen and antibiotics. A deliberate focus on community-based programs is needed to improve coverage of protective, preventive and treatment interventions. We therefore aimed to describe caregiver knowledge and care seeking behaviour for childhood pneumonia, in a high child mortality setting in Nigeria, to…

  • Maternal mental well-being and recent child illnesses–A cross-sectional survey analysis from Jigawa State, Nigeria

Open Access•Julius Salako, Damola Bakare et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

Child health indicators in Northern Nigeria remain low. The bidirectional association between child health and maternal well-being is also poorly understood. We aim to describe the association between recent child illness, socio-demographic factors and maternal mental well-being in Jigawa State, Nigeria. We analysed a cross-sectional household survey conducted in Kiyawa local government area, Jigawa State, from January 2020 to March 2020 amongst …

  • Measuring oxygen access

    Open Access•Hamish R Graham, Omotayo E Olojede et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted global oxygen system deficiencies and revealed gaps in how we understand and measure ‘oxygen access’. We present a case study on oxygen access from 58 health facilities in Lagos state, Nigeria. We found large differences in oxygen access between facilities (primary vs secondary, government vs private) and describe three key domains to consider when measuring oxygen access: availability, cost, use. Of 58 facil…

  • Clinical Audit of Antenatal Service Provision in Nigeria

Kayode O Osungbade, Vivian N Shaahu et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2011

We audited records of 365 pregnant women whose mean age was 25.6 ± 5.6 years. Their mean gestational age at booking was 29.3 ± 2.7 weeks; their mean number of antenatal visits was 4.2 ± 2.3. Weight, blood pressure, and urine were checked on 97.3%, 95.1%, and 86.3% of the women respectively. Hemoglobin estimation was done on 19.2% of women; 34.8% received two doses of tetanus toxoid. Malaria prophylaxis and iron and folate supplements were provide…
