  • Use of sleep quality questionary and cortisol awakening response as complementary tools for the evaluation of major depression progression

Open Access•Lucas Torres, Lucas Henrique Sousa Freitas Torres et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2024

  • Psychophysiological responses to group cognitive-behavioral therapy in depressive patients

Open Access•Yves Martins Varela, Raíssa Nóbrega de Almeida et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2023

  • Moderators of ayahuasca’s biological antidepressant action

Open Access•Geovan Menezes de Sousa, Vagner Deuel De O Tavares et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

In summary, some specific emotional and physiological parameters during experimental ayahuasca session were revealed as critical moderators of the improvement of major depression biomarkers, mainly BDNF and SC two days after ayahuasca intake. These findings contribute to paving the way for future studies investigating the biological antidepressant response to psychedelic therapy

  • Success of in vitro fertilization and its association with the levels of psychophysiological stress before and during the treatment

Nathália Karen Maia Bezerra, Ana Cecília de Menezes Galvão et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2020

Despite the advance of assisted reproduction, high rates of failure in treatment are still observed. Herein, we investigated how the psychophysiological stress profiles of patients can modulate the in vitro fertilization treatment (IVF) outcome. The women who had failure in IVF ( n = 13; 65%) had higher baseline salivary cortisol awakening response and anxiety-state during treatment than patients who became pregnant ( n = 7; 35%). Patients with m…

  • Cortisol Modulation by Ayahuasca in Patients With Treatment Resistant Depression and Healthy Controls

Open Access•Ana Cecília de Menezes Galvão, Raíssa Nóbrega de Almeida et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2018

Major depression is a highly prevalent mood disorder, affecting about 350 million people, and around 30% of the patients are resistant to currently available antidepressant medications. Recent evidence from a randomized controlled trial supports the rapid antidepressant effects of the psychedelic ayahuasca in treatment-resistant depression. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of ayahuasca on plasma cortisol and awakening salivary cort…

  • Common Marmosets: A Potential Translational Animal Model of Juvenile Depression

    Open Access•Nicole Galvão-Coelho, Nicole Leite Galvão-Coelho et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2017

Major depression is a psychiatric disorder with high prevalence in the general population, with increasing expression in adolescence, about 14% in young people. Frequently, it presents as a chronic condition, showing no remission even after several pharmacological treatments and persisting in adult life. Therefore, distinct protocols and animal models have been developed to increase the understanding of this disease or search for new therapies. T…

  • Physiological and behavioral responses to routine procedures in captive common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus)

Open Access•Ana Cecília de Menezes Galvão, Renata Gonçalves Ferreira et al.•ARTICLE•Primates•2016

  • Endocrine and Cognitive Adaptations to Cope with Stress in Immature Common Marmosets (Callithrix jacchus): Sex and Age Matter

Open Access•Maria Bernardete Cordeiro De Sousa, Ana Cecília de Menezes Galvão et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2015

Phenotypic sex differences in primates are associated with body differentiation during the early stages of life, expressed in both physiological and behavioral features. Hormones seem to play a pivotal role in creating a range of responses to meet environmental and social demands, resulting in better reactions to cope with challenges to survival and reproduction. Steroid hormones actively participate in neuroplasticity and steroids from both gona…
