Svein Kyvik, Taran Thune et al.•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2015

This article reports on a study of the quality assessment of doctoral dissertations, and asks whether examiner characteristics influence assessment of research quality in PhD dissertations. Utilising a multi-dimensional concept of quality of PhD dissertations, we look at differences in assessment of research quality, and particularly test whether prior relationship to supervisor, examiners' assessment experience and the regional affiliation of ex…

  • Explaining the increase in publication productivity among academic staff

    Svein Kyvik, Dag W Aksnes•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2015•Cited by: 10•References: 26

In Norwegian research universities, a large individual increase has taken place in scientific and scholarly publishing over the last 30 years. The purpose of this article is to explain the reasons for this growth in a generational perspective. We put forward six hypotheses that can be illuminated by cross-sectional data drawn from five surveys to academic staff and by data from other statistical data sources. New generations of academic staff: (a…

    Svein Kyvik•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2014

This article focuses on the assessment procedures of Norwegian PhD theses as viewed by external members of evaluation committees from three countries with different examination systems; the USA, the UK and Sweden. Their viewpoints give useful information not only on the pros and cons with the Norwegian system, but also on the strengths and weaknesses of their own national assessment systems. Various procedures of the four national PhD assessment …

This article examines changes in completion rates and time-to-degree in Norwegian doctoral training over the last 30 years. A steadily increasing share of doctoral candidates holding a fellowship have been awarded their doctoral degree within five years; from 30% of those admitted in 1980 to 60% of those admitted 25 years later. Furthermore, the proportion of fellowship holders awarded a doctoral degree within 10 years increased from less than 50…

  • Popular Science Publishing and Contributions to Public Discourse among University Faculty

    Open Access•Svein Kyvik•ARTICLE•Science Communication•2005•Cited by: 10•References: 17

This article explores the roles of university faculty as popularizers of research and as public intellectuals contributing to public discourse through publishing articles for a lay public. Mail surveys undertaken in 1992 and 2001 among faculty members at Norwegian universities show that academic staff in the humanities and social sciences published more popular scientific articles and contributed more to public debate than their fellow colleagues…

  • Child Care, Research Collaboration, and Gender Differences in Scientific Productivity

    Open Access•Svein Kyvik, Mari Teigen•ARTICLE•Science Technology & Human Values•1996•Cited by: 15•References: 15

Large differences in scientific productivity between male and female researchers have not yet been explained satisfactorily. This study finds that child care and lack of research collaboration are the two factors that cause significant gender differences in scientific publishing. Women with young children and women who do not collaborate in research with other scientists are clearly less productive than both their male and female colleagues

  • Motherhood and Scientific Productivity

    Open Access•Svein Kyvik•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•1990•Cited by: 27•References: 4

Virtually all studies on scientific productivity and gender find that men publish more than women. Several investigations indicate that women with children are more productive than childless women, which in turn has been the basis for claiming that women's lower productivity cannot be due to maternal responsibilities. This Note suggests that comparisons between women with children, and those without, can be misleading. When children's age is intr…
