Neonatal Outcomes of Mothers with Syphilis During Pregnancy
Syphilis still represents a potential problem for women of childbearing age and their newborns, even in a high-income setting, making congenital syphilis far from being eradicated in Italy. Moreover, adequate and early treatment should be provided to avoid negative consequences to the newborns
Diaphragm Thickness and Contraction During Non-Invasive Ventilation
Diaphragm thickness increased, whereas DTF decreased over time on NIV in preterm infants with RDS. NIV duration was not associated with changes in diaphragm trophism. NIV discontinuation failure was associated with thicker diaphragm at the start of NIV, as well as with a reduction in diaphragm trophism over the NIV cycle
A Prospective Study on the Systematic Application of the Safe Insertion Umbilical Venous Catheter (SiuveC) Bundle
Background/Objectives : Inserting umbilical venous catheters is a common procedure in neonatal intensive care units. However, this maneuver is potentially associated with early and late complications, some of which can be severe. Several strategies have been described in the literature to minimize the risk of such complications. The recently described SIUVeC (Safe Insertion Umbilical Venous Catheter) protocol incorporates all the innovations sugg…
Acute Peritoneal Dialysis in Critical Preterm Infants
Background : Acute kidney injury (AKI) in critically ill neonates is usually of pre-renal origin and, often, pharmacological treatment is not sufficient for resolution, requiring kidney replacement therapy (KRT). Due to the small body size and the unavailability of adequate devices for these patients, peritoneal dialysis (PD) appears to be the most easily achievable procedure. However, guidelines for PD management are lacking in this population. …
Sleep Disorders in Infants and Toddlers with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy Treated with Therapeutic Hypothermia
Low-risk infants and toddlers with HIE showed a low incidence of sleep disorders, similar to those observed in control group, with some exceptions. As these incidences may increase significantly with age, further clinical assessments will be needed to confirm these data at older ages
An Interesting Case of Neonatal AKI
Acute kidney injury is a frequent complication for critical newborns. Its management is a significant challenge, especially in extremely low-birth-weight (ELBW) infants. Currently, peritoneal dialysis (PD) is the most manageable treatment. However, data are lacking regarding when diuresis can be declared irreversible relative to the start of PD. A female infant born at 28 + 0 weeks with a birth weight of 800 g by monochorionic diamniotic pregnanc…
Early Respiratory Physiotherapy versus an Individualized Postural Care Program for Reducing Mechanical Ventilation in Preterm Infants
early respiratory physiotherapy in preterm infants requiring non-invasive respiratory support at birth is safe and has proven to be protective against haemodynamically significant PDA
Lung UltraSound Targeted Recruitment (LUSTR)
This study investigated the effectiveness of an original Lung UltraSound Targeted Recruitment (LUSTR) protocol to improve the success of lung recruitment maneuvers (LRMs), which are performed as a rescue approach in critically ill neonates. All the LUSTR maneuvers, performed on infants with an oxygen saturation/fraction of inspired oxygen (S/F) ratio below 200, were included in this case-control study (LUSTR-group). The LUSTR-group was matched by…
Platelet Count and Volume and Pharmacological Closure with Paracetamol of Ductus Arteriosus in Preterm Infants
Background: Low platelet count might promote resistance to pharmacological closure with indomethacin and ibuprofen of a hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (hsPDA). However, no studies have investigated if this occurs with paracetamol. Methods: We retrospectively assessed the correlation between platelet count, mean platelet volume (MPV), and plateletcrit (PCT), as well as the effectiveness of paracetamol in closing hsPDA in infa…
