  • Worldwide trends in underweight and obesity from 1990 to 2022: A pooled analysis of 3663 population-representative studies with 222 million children, adolescents, and adults

    Open Access•Nowell H Phelps, Rosie Singleton et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2024

BACKGROUND: Underweight and obesity are associated with adverse health outcomes throughout the life course. We estimated the individual and combined prevalence of underweight or thinness and obesity, and their changes, from 1990 to 2022 for adults and school-aged children and adolescents in 200 countries and territories. METHODS: ). For school-aged children and adolescents, we report thinness (BMI 2 SD above the median). FINDINGS: From 1990 to 20…

  • The influence of immigrant background and parental education on overweight and obesity in 8-year-old children in Norway

Open Access•Bente Øvrebø, Marte Karoline Råberg Kjøllesdal et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Children with immigrant background had higher prevalence of overweight/obesity than non-immigrant background children. The difference varied according to region of origin but not substantially according to parental education. There is a need for culturally acceptable preventative measures targeting the parents of immigrant background children

  • Height and body-mass index trajectories of school-aged children and adolescents from 1985 to 2019 in 200 countries and territories: A pooled analysis of 2181 population-based studies with 65 million p…

    Open Access•Andrea Rodriguez-Martinez, Andrea Rodriguez‐Martinez et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2020

BACKGROUND: Comparable global data on health and nutrition of school-aged children and adolescents are scarce. We aimed to estimate age trajectories and time trends in mean height and mean body-mass index (BMI), which measures weight gain beyond what is expected from height gain, for school-aged children and adolescents. METHODS: For this pooled analysis, we used a database of cardiometabolic risk factors collated by the Non-Communicable Disease …

  • Adolescent impulsivity and soft drink consumption: The role of parental regulation

    Open Access•Elisabeth L Melbye, Ingunn Holden Bergh et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 89

  • Post-intervention effects on screen behaviours and mediating effect of parental regulation: The HEalth In Adolescents study – a multi-component school-based randomized controlled trial

Open Access•Ingunn Holden Bergh, Maartje M Van Stralen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

    Current Controlled Trials ISRCTN98552879

  • Does tracking of dietary behaviours differ by parental education in children during the transition into adolescence

Open Access•Torunn Holm Totland, Mekdes K Gebremariam et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2013

Objective The present study investigates the changes and tracking of dietary behaviours in Norwegian 11-year-olds and examines the association between parental education and dietary tracking over a time period of 20 months. Design Longitudinal data from the Norwegian HEalth In Adolescents (HEIA) cohort study followed up at three time points (2007–2009). Setting Intakes of fruits, vegetables and snacks were assessed by frequency and intakes of sug…

  • Stability and change in screen-based sedentary behaviours and associated factors among Norwegian children in the transition between childhood and adolescence

Open Access•Mekdes K Gebremariam, Torunn Holm Totland et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Use of TV/DVD and computer/electronic games increased with age and tracked over time in this group of 11-13 year old Norwegian children. Interventions targeting these sedentary behaviours should thus be introduced early. The identified modifiable and non-modifiable factors associated with change in TST and tracking of high TST should be taken into consideration when planning such interventions

  • Correlates of weight status among Norwegian 11-year-olds: The Heia study

Open Access•May Grydeland, Ingunn Holden Bergh et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

The present study showed a social gradient in weight status in 11-year-olds. Both breakfast consumption and moderate to vigorous physical activity were inversely associated with weight status. No associations were found between intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and snacks, playing computer games and weight status. Watching TV was positively associated with weight status for boys but not for girls. Interventions are needed to gain more insight i…

  • Exploring mediators of accelerometer assessed physical activity in young adolescents in the HEalth In Adolescents study – a group randomized controlled trial

Open Access•Ingunn Holden Bergh, Maartje M Van Stralen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

While no mediation effects were observed, change in both personal and social-environmental factors predicted change in physical activity behavior. Hence, a social- ecological approach targeting a wide range of determinants to promote change in physical activity holds promise. Overweight and normal weight adolescents may not respond in the same way to school-based physical activity interventions. Therefore, strategies to better reach the overweigh…
