  • Shared Language Erosion: Rethinking Immigrant Family Communication and Impacts on Youth Development

    Open Access•Ronald B Cox, Darcey K Desouza et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2021

In this paper we make the case for Shared Language Erosion as a potential explanation for the negative outcomes described in the immigrant paradox for second- and third- generation immigrants (e.g., declines in physical, mental, and behavioral health). While not negating the important role of cultural adaptation, we posit that parent-child communication difficulties due to a process we are calling Shared Language Erosion is driving the observed a…

Two psychoeducation interventions for parents and children were conducted: Family Lifestyle (FL) focused on food and physical activity; Family Dynamics (FD) added parenting and healthy emotion management. A third Peer Group (PG) intervention taught social acceptance to children. Crossing interventions yielded four conditions: FL, FL + PG, FL…

    Open Access•Angel Gonzalez, Ángel F González et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Tourism Analysis…•2021•References: 8

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to empirically test an existing conceptual model from Mak et al. Design/methodology/approach The quantitative study surveyed 330 travelers and used descriptive analyses of all the variables involved. A …

    Doris I Cancel-Tirado, Sarah L Feeney et al.•ARTICLE•Family & Community Health•2018

This study explores how low-income rural Latino children and their mothers differ from their non-Latino white counterparts in terms of health, well-being, and health care access. A subsample of non-Latino white (n = 201) and Latino (n = 157) children and their mothers was drawn from the Rural Families Speak about Health Project, a multistate, cross-sectional data set developed through mixed purposive sampling methods. Findings suggest that Latino…

  • Contraceptive Method Choice Among Young Adults: Influence of Individual and Relationship Factors

S Marie Harvey, Lisa P Oakley et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 3

Because decisions related to contraceptive behavior are often made by young adults in the context of specific relationships, the relational context likely influences use of contraceptives. Data presented here are from in-person structured interviews with 536 Black, Hispanic, and White young adults from East Los Angeles, California. We collected partner-specific relational and contraceptive data on all sexual partnerships for each individual, on f…

  • Opportunities to use drugs and the transition to drug use among adolescents from Caracas, Venezuela

Ronald B Cox, Julie M Croff et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2016

This paper estimates prevalence of opportunity to use a substance, for use, and for use given an opportunity to use among a sample of Venezuelan adolescents. Several covariates on the opportunity to use and the transition to use are also examined. Findings show that lifetime prevalence of substance use among Venezuelan adolescents increases dramatically and more …

  • Competing Priorities: Partner-Specific Relationship Characteristics and Motives for Condom Use Among At-Risk Young Adults

S Marie Harvey, Isaac J Washburn et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Condoms protect against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancy and are essential to sexual health efforts targeting young adults, who are disproportionately affected by both outcomes. Understanding condom use motives is critical to increasing condom use. Research in this area is limited, particularly regarding the roles of partners and relationship factors. Using a longitudinal sample of…

This study examined differences in predictors of marijuana use versus quantity of marijuana use across the high school years, using annual assessments from the Oregon Youth Study (OYS) and a two-part model for semicontinuous data. The OYS is a community sample of at-risk boys followed from age 10 years. In order to capture dynamic prediction effects, change scores of predictors, as well as baseline scores, were included. Baseline predictors predo…

All of these studies demonstrated that sharing the positive experience heightened its impact on positive affect. In Study 4, we conducted a four-week journal study in which the experimental participants kept a journal of grateful experiences and shared them…
