  • Geometric morphometric analysis of facial sexual dimorphism in a contemporary sample: An application to sex prediction of ancient human remains

Open Access•Juliette Legros, Pauline Borde et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2026

Focusing on craniofacial bones, this study investigates morphological variation related to sexual dimorphism in order to deepen our understanding of human biological diversity and to provide new data from a contemporary reference sample. Accordingly, the research was guided by three objectives (i) identify the facial regions exhibiting the greatest sexual dimorphism using landmark-based geometric morphometric method; (ii) evaluate the reliability…

  • Dental care of Anne d'Alègre (1565–1619, Laval, France). Between therapeutic reason and aesthetic evidence, the place of the social and the medical in the care in modern period

Open Access•Rozenn Colleter, Antoine Galibourg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023

Analysis of the oral cavity of human archaeological remains can provide essential information on the general health status of the person. The objectives of this paper are (i) to highlight an analysis of the oral state of the embalmed body of a 17th century female aristocrat with modern techniques of periodontal diagnosis and (ii) to provide a description of the therapeutic and aesthetic management intended to limit the functional and aesthetic co…

  • Geometric morphometric study of the early shape of the hip bone (os coxae): Variations with age and sex

    Open Access•Clotilde Lambeaux, F Savall et al.•ARTICLE•HOMO•2020

0.065). Overall, the superior part of the pelvic bone becomes narrower with age. This study has shown that geometric morphometric analysis of the pelvic bone is feasible in very young children and revealed changes in shape with age but not differences with sex.

  • Analysis of size and shape differences between ancient and present-day Italian crania using metrics and geometric morphometrics based on multislice computed tomography

Open Access•Fabrice Dedouit, Giuseppe Guglielmi et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Sciences Research•2017•References: 1

The Museum of Human Anatomy in Naples houses a collection of ancient Graeco-Roman crania. The aim of this study was to use multislice computed tomography (MSCT) to evaluate and objectively quantify potential differences in cranial dimensions and shapes between ancient Graeco-Roman crania ( n = 36) and modern-day southern Italian crania ( n = 35) and then to characterize the cranial changes occurring over more than 2000 years, known as secular cha…

Open Access•Norbert Telmon, F Savall et al.•ARTICLE•Ethics Medicine and Public Health•2015

  • Hair morphology and anthropological applications

    Open Access•Céline Guilbeau-Frugier, Céline Guilbeau‐Frugier et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2006

The histological study of hair has a long history, dating from the 19th century. We obtained a collection of hair taken from people of known geographic origin. We analyzed these samples according to their transversal cut shape index, derived from computerized image-processing. We noted statistically significant variation according to the geographic origin of subjects. This morphological variation may reflect genetic distance. This reliable, quick…

  • Cephalometric study of mandibular dimorphism in living population in South-West France

Open Access•Isabelle Barthélémy, Norbert Telmon et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1999•References: 5

The role of the mandible in sex determination is still poorly defined because of the plasticity of this bone. We carried out a teleradiographic study of the mandibles of 63 living white subjects, measuring bigonial breadth, bicondylar breadth (anterior radiographs), mandibular symphysis height, mandibular length, articulare-gonion height, mandibular ramus height and mandibular body length (lateral radiographs). All these paramters showed signific…

  • Comparison of a Bone Criterion and a dental Criterion for estimation of age at death in the study of an Ancient Cemetery

    Open Access•Norbert Telmon, Daniel Rouge et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Two methods, a visual method based on the appearance of the auricular surface of the ilium and a metric method based on two dental criteria, were used in conjunction for estimation of skeletal age at death in paleodemographic study of an ancient cemetery, and were found to be coherent. However, the paleodemographic profiles differed according to sex, indicating a sexual difference in the evolution of the sacroiliac joint
