  • Urbanization, Culture, and Helpfulness: Cross-Cultural Studies in England and the Sudan

    Open Access•Yousif, Yousif Yousif et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1995•Cited by: 2•References: 11

Social contact, help exchange, and attitudes toward helpfulness were examined in both urban and small town settings in England and the Sudan using self-report measures. Much of the cultural analysis of the "urban unhelpfulness" effect, that is, lower levels of helpfulness in urban settings, suggests that this effect is dependent on cultural and community factors. In particular, it is possible that Islamic norms stressing a communal orientation, p…

  • The receptivity of older adults to innovative mutual-aid arrangements

    Open Access•Charles Korte•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•1991•References: 2

This article reviews the receptivity of older adults to innovative mutual-aid arrangements, an area that may become more critical to the need fulfillment of the elderly as we become an aging society. The limited background to date gives a mixed picture: There are a growing number of programs, but participation in these programs is small. Surveys suggest substantial levels of interest in help-exchange among the elderly, and yet values of self-suff…

  • Helpfulness in Turkey: Cities, Towns, and Urban Villages

    Open Access•Charles Korte, Namik Ayvalioglu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1981•Cited by: 5•References: 18

A field study was carried out in Turkey in order to compare the level of helpfulness in towns, cities, and urban squatter settlements. Three different naturalistic measures of helpfulness were used: willingness to give change, willingness to cooperate with an interview, and response to a small accident. The results generally showed significantly less helpfulness in Turkish cities than in the towns and urban squatter settlements, which showed equi…

  • Urban-Nonurban Differences in Social Behavior and Social Psychological Models of Urban Impact

    Open Access•Charles Korte•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•1980•Cited by: 19•References: 7

An examination of urban-nonurban differences in several aspects of social behavior shows that urbanites are different only in limited ways from their less urban counterparts. In an urban environment, there does appear to be less social contact between neighbors and less helpfulness and consideration shown toward strangers, while social contact between relatives and between friends is no different from what is found in smaller-sized communities. T…

  • Helpfulness in Dutch society as a function of urbanization and environmental input level

  • Pluralistic Ignorance About Student Radicalism

    Charles Korte•ARTICLE•Sociometry•1972•Cited by: 8

A survey study of student attitudes revealed a bias in the estimation of other students' opinions on various issues. There was a significant tendency for students to overestimate the degree to which other students endorsed the radical position. The results contradict earlier research which found underestimation-, rather than overestimation, of the extent to which others hold opinions that exemplify presumably predominant values. This study also r…

  • Group Influences on the Helpfulness of Accident Witnesses

    Open Access•Charles Korte•ARTICLE•Law & Society Review•1970•References: 7

Action that occurs in a group or social context has always held a certain fascination for students of human behavior, partly because of our many notions about the powerful forces that groups exert on the individual. Impressions of group forces derive in part from Le Bon's (1895) early account of crowd behavior, which characterized the crowd's power over the individual as control that was essentially hypnotic, resulting in extremities of behavior,…
