    William A Christian•CHAPTER•Anthropology of Catholicism•2017

The book Person and God in a Spanish Valley , by anthropologist and historian William A. Christian, is a classic twentieth-century study in the anthropology of Catholicism. It embraces key spatial and temporal dynamics of Catholicism through the analysis of devotional behavior across a range of intersecting axes and contexts. Among these, gender, class, and moment within the life course are shown to be of particular importance in shaping the qual…

  • Muslim Prayer on Picture Postcards of French Algeria, 1900-1960

    William A Christian, Amira Mittermaier•ARTICLE•Material Religion•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 9

From 1900 to 1960 French soldiers and visitors to North Africa sent home striking postcards showing Muslims in prayer. As inscribed objects they linked separated family and friends, and were collected, compiled and stored. Based on 2500 of these cards offered on an Internet auction site, this study examines the senders, the receivers, and the attitudes to the prayers in the messages. The latter range from indifference, apprehension, and ridicule …

After she was given corrective glasses, and then had an operation, she began to have dizzy spells and be unsteady on her feet. Finally in February, 1986, after a bad fall and vomiting, she was taken to a hospital, where a large tumor was found in her brain. She was immediately operated on, and a valve was installe…

Parmi les expressions et les postures des visionnaires, d'une grande variété, il y eut une sélection complexe et tous y prirent part : les voyants eux-mêmes, leur entourage, les journalistes, les photographes, le grand public. There are parallels to the North Mexican folk saints in Western Europe. What differences there are seem to follow naturally from the different context of Western Europe: the more pervasive influence of scientific medicine; the comparative stability of Western Europe governments; and above all, the more effective presence of the institutional Church

Few passages of Scripture intrigued Augustine as much as the first sentence of the book of Genesis. In the Confessions, in his treatises on Genesis, in the City of God, and elsewhere he dwells on it and recurs to it, as though he felt he could not exhaust its suggestions and implications. His reflections on this sentence are ample evidence of the acuteness, force, and fecundity of his mind
