Lesbian Bars, Archival Media Bricolage and Research-Creation
This article reflects on the author’s research-creation project entitled After Hours Chez Madame Arthur as a speculative practice of archival media bricolage. After Hours was a multimedia installation returning to the 1970s lesbian bar Chez Madame Arthur mounted at the Centre Never Apart in summer 2019. Made possible by the support of co-researchers, community groups, technicians, research assistants and artists who share my fascination with loca…
Male homoparentalité with recourse to surrogate mothers in Quebec: The mediated cases of Kevin Lambert and Joël Legendre
This article analyzes two high-profile cases of gay male celebrities, Kevin Lambert and Joël Legendre, who announced publicly in April 2014 that they had founded families through recourse to surrogate mothers. As newsworthy accounts combining celebrity, male homoparentalité (same-sex parenting) with assisted reproduction, a controversial practice with an uncertain legal status, these cases circulated widely as human-interest stories across Quebec…
Reading the Multimedia Archive Surrounding Montreal’s Post-War LGBTQ Bars: A Genealogical Return to Madame Arthur and Il était une fois dans l’Est
This article proposes a genealogical meditation on the changing meanings and “eventfulness” of Montreal’s post-war LGBTQ bars read through a multimedia archive. Bars are understood here as material and discursive chronotopes or articulations of space-time (Bakhtin) frequently understood as metonymic to LGBTQ experience and historical struggle. I analyze an archive (social histories, photographs and drawings, journalism, fiction, and memoirs) asso…
The Times of The Hours: Queer Melodrama and the Dilemma of Marriage
This article explores Stephen Daldry's The Hours (US/UK, 2002) as a feminist and queer meditation on the dilemma of marriage. An important queer-authored crossover film in the tradition of the family melodrama and the woman's film, The Hours offers a considered return to the iconic cultural form of the white middle-class nuclear family in a context where norms of heterosexual family and conjugal life are at once firmly entrenched and widely conte…
Exile media, global news flows and democratization: The role of Democratic Voice of Burma in Burma’s 2010 elections
This article explores the links between transnational media flows and social and political change in authoritarian regimes through a conjunctural study of Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB), a Burmese exile media organization. Drawing on observation and interviews conducted at DVB’s Oslo studio during the 2010 elections in Burma as well as documentary research, the article explores how diasporic media may contribute to democratization in a military …

Report: Citizen Journalism in Burma and the Legacy of Graham Spry
This report explores issues arising from the 2009 Graham Spry Memorial events on the subject of citizen journalism in Burma, staging an encounter between aspects of the work of Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) and Graham Spry’s legacy as a politically-engaged intellectual and lobbyist. I discuss the role of DVB as a “citizen journalism” network embedded in a “space of flows.” Particular emphasis is placed on the organization’s judicious use of “ol…
Queer Kinship and Ambivalence
This article explores the relationship between queer thought and kinship through a study of video autoethnographies by Jean Carlomusto and Richard Fung. I propose the concept of ambivalence as a useful point of departure for grappling with the conflicted political, affective, and conceptual terrain of LGBT kinship. Through close textual analysis of four video autoethnographies, I extend existing sociological, anthropological, and philosophical sc…
