  • National Character Does Not Reflect Mean Personality Trait Levels in 49 Cultures

    Open Access•Antonio Terracciano, Ahmed M Abdel-Khalek et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2005

Most people hold beliefs about personality characteristics typical of members of their own and others' cultures. These perceptions of national character may be generalizations from personal experience, stereotypes with a “kernel of truth,” or inaccurate stereotypes. We obtained national character ratings of 3989 people from 49 cultures and compared them with the average personality scores of culture members assessed by observer ratings and self-r…

  • Where is the Personality in Personality Disorder Assessment? A Comparison Across Four Sets of Personality Disorder Scales

Krista K Trobst, Lindsay E Ayearst et al.•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•2004

The present research examined the amount and kind of personality measured within four sets of personality disorder (PD) scales. Three samples of undergraduate students (Ns = 326, 537, and 617) completed at least one PD measure and a combined interpersonal circumplex model (ICM) and five-factor model (FFM) measure. The FFM dimensions were found to account for between 5% to 57% of the variance in personality disorder symptomatology depending on the…

Because it is well validated and relatively comprehensive, the Five‐Factor Model (FFM) of personality lends itself to systematic exploratory studies that may sometimes lead to unanticipated findings. In this article, w…

  • The Role of Emotion in Social Support Provision

    Open Access•Krista K Trobst, Rebecca L Collins et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•1994•Cited by: 27•References: 32

Two studies examined the association between emotion-related factors and intentions to provide social support to a distressed peer. In both studies, providers' gender and their level of dispositional empathy were related to anticipated support provision. Women and persons high in trait empathy were more supportive than men and persons low in trait empathy. Consistent with predictions, the gender effect was largely mediated by that of empathy. Stu…
