Extreme fasting among Daoist priestesses of the Tang Dynasty
Austere and prolonged fasting among Shangqing Daoist priestesses ( Daogu) of the Tang Dynasty (618–907) occurred as part of a lifestyle practice to achieve a mystical state of afterlife existence, body immortality and residence in the Shangqing heavenly kingdom. These fasting practices were conducted exclusively for religious reasons and cannot be reconceptualized as a form of an eating disorder without radically altering their original purpose a…

The striking age-old minority of fasting males in the history of anorexia nervosa
From Fasting Saints to Anorexic Girls
Was late-nineteenth-century nervous vomiting an early variant of bulimia nervosa
We studied a wide variety of medical publications to find out whether late- nineteenth-century nervous or hysterical vomiting was clinically consistent with modern bulimia nervosa. Since modern diagnostic criteria of bulimia nervosa may be time- and culture-bound, we made use of adapted criteria, focusing on the more overt, physical and behavioural features of the syndrome. In retrospect, it became obvious that only some of these specific diagnos…
Conflict Management in Married Eating Disorder Patients
Conflict management was studied in 21 eating-disordered (ED) patients and their husbands, 21 maritally distressed (MD) and 21 non-distressed (ND) couples. On the Problem List (Hahlweg et al., 1980) ED couples reported significantly more conflict topics than ND couples, yet fewer than MD couples. The interaction during a conflict discussion was videotaped and the (verbal and nonverbal) components were rated according to the KPI coding system (Hahl…
Psychological distress in husbands of eating disorder patients
Psychological distress scores of 21 eating-disordered (ED) women and their husbands were compared with those of two matched groups of 21 maritally distressed (MD) and 21 maritally nondistressed (ND) control groups. In contrast to previous clinical reports, ED husbands in the present group did not report significantly more psychological distress than did ND husbands, and actually reported less interpersonal sensitivity and hostility than did MD hu…

Drop‐out during in‐patient treatment of anorexia nervosa
Although anorexia nervosa patients are notorious for their ‘resistance’ to treatment, the phenomenon of drop‐out during in‐patient treatment of these patients is scarcely described in the literature. In a consecutive series of 133 hospitalized female anorexia nervosa patients the authors found a remarkably high drop‐out rate of about 50 per cent, spread over different phases in the therapeutic process. In order to find some ‘risk factors’ concern…
