Labor Palavers: Mediation and Mistrust in a Spanish West African Plantation Colony
This article examines a new constellation of post-slavery unfreedom by shifting the analytical lens from recruitment to the potential exit from indentured contracts. Focusing on Spanish Guinea, it investigates how middlemen exploited worker complaints or “labor palavers” to channel workers into repeating cycles of contractual entrapment, sustaining the colonial plantation economy of Fernando Po well into the period of African decolonization. The …
Rent increases and mental health among low-income renters in Australia: A longitudinal analysis
Regulation of within-tenancy rent increases is weak in Australia. While links between unaffordable and insecure housing and poor mental health have been established, the mental health burden of landlord-imposed rent increases - which represent a specific type of housing shock - has not been examined empirically. We used fixed-effects regression analyses of 9808 observations (from 3604 individuals) to investigate the relationship between within-te…
From the Origins of Money to Secret Societies: The Life and Work of the “Amazingly Industrious” Heinrich Schurtz
Caring-from infrastructures of safety: A conceptual review of care ethics, housing and domestic and family violence from Australia
Despite decades of reform, housing systems remain ill-equipped to respond to domestic and family violence (DFV), with housing and safety responses fragmented across sectors and policy domains. This conceptual review synthesises peer-reviewed and grey literature across feminist care ethics, housing studies, feminist geography, public health, and DFV to advance the concept of housing as an infrastructure of safety. Through this lens, safety plannin…
Hoarding disorder, therapeutic jurisprudence and residential tenancy law: A complex relationship and opportunities for reform
For many, home represents comfort and security. However, for renters living with hoarding disorder, stable housing is often at risk. Hoarding disorder is a chronic mental illness associated with significant public health risks to both communities and individuals across jurisdictions. Internationally, residential tenancy laws often address hoarding using blunt legal measures at odds with the treatment needs of people living with the condition, whi…
Housing Vulnerability and Covid-19 Outbreaks: When Crises Collide
When communities face infectious disease outbreaks such as COVID-19, their resilience is largely dependent on their social vulnerability. Housing, which functions as a precipitator and outcome of vulnerability, needs to be considered in this context. Using geospatial data, we developed a housing vulnerability index which demonstrates that COVID-19 transmission hotspots in Melbourne are potentially related to where and how people live – which in t…
Characteristics of urban neighbourhood environments and cognitive age in mid-age and older adults
Associations of neighbourhood environmental attributes and socio-economic status with health-related quality of life in urban mid-aged and older adults: Mediation by physical activity and sedentary be…
This study examined the associations of objectively assessed physical features of the neighbourhood environment with physical and mental aspects of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) as measured by the SF-36, and the roles of physical activity and sedentary behaviour in these associations. We used data from a national sample of Australian mid-aged and older adults living in urban areas (N = 4141). Environmental attributes were computed for 1-…
Vulnerability and recovery: Long-term mental and physical health trajectories following climate-related disasters
Extreme weather and climate-related disaster events are associated with a range of adverse health outcomes. People are not equally vulnerable to the adversity, experiencing varied patterns of long-term health trajectories in recovery depending on their vulnerabilities, capacities, and resiliencies. This study aims to identify latent mental and physical health trajectories and their associations with person- and place-based pre-disaster predictors…
Teodorín Situation (Part II): The Geopolitics of China and the U.S. in the Gulf of Guinea
The essay is divided and published into two parts: each separately assesses the main recent trends in the national and international politics of Equatorial Guinea - spanning roughly between the Covid19 crisis and May 2023. Part II examines the so far unfounded claims regarding the Chinese Navy's plan to build its first Atlantic base in Equatorial Guinea, which has been widely publicized by the U.S. foreign policy establishment. Moreover, this pie…
Teodorín Situation (Part I): Presidential Succession in Equatorial Guinea
The essay is divided and published into two parts: each separately assessing the main recent trends in the national and international politics of Equatorial Guinea - roughly between the Covid-19 crisis and May 2023. Part I profiles the current vice president, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, widely known by his moniker Teodorín. His dynastic succession seems practically set in stone and quite imminent, given that his father, the president, Teodoro O…
Machine Learning for Prediction of Cognitive Health in Adults Using Sociodemographic, Neighbourhood Environmental, and Lifestyle Factors
The environment we live in, and our lifestyle within this environment, can shape our cognitive health. We investigated whether sociodemographic, neighbourhood environment, and lifestyle variables can be used to predict cognitive health status in adults. Cross-sectional data from the AusDiab3 study, an Australian cohort study of adults (34-97 years) ( n = 4141) was used. Cognitive function was measured using processing speed and memory tests, whic…
Between liminality and a new life in Australia: What is the effect of precarious housing on the mental health of humanitarian migrants
Housing and health: An updated glossary
Recent crises have underscored the importance that housing has in sustaining good health and, equally, its potential to harm health. Considering this and building on Howden-Chapman’s early glossary of housing and health and the WHO Housing and Health Guidelines, this paper introduces a range of housing and health-related terms, reflecting almost 20 years of development in the field. It defines key concepts currently used in research, policy and p…
Touts: Recruiting Indentured Labor in the Gulf of Guinea
Touts is a historical account of the troubled formation of a colonial labor market in the Gulf of Guinea and a major contribution to the historiography of indentured labor, which has relatively few reference points in Africa. The setting is West Africa’s largest island, Fernando Po or Bioko in today’s Equatorial Guinea, 100 kilometers off the coast of Nigeria. The Spanish ruled this often-ignored island from the mid-nineteenth century until 1968.…
From urban neighbourhood environments to cognitive health: A cross-sectional analysis of the role of physical activity and sedentary behaviours
In the context of a low-density country like Australia, denser urban environments with access to parkland may benefit residents' cognitive health by providing opportunities for participation in a diversity of activities. A more fine-grained characterisation of the neighbourhood environment may be necessary to tease out the negative and positive impacts of inter-related characteristics of urban neighbourhood environments on cognitive function
Money, Indenture, and Neo-slavery in the Spanish Gulf of Guinea, 1820s to 1890s
This article looks for the initial configuration of indentured labour in the final stages of the Spanish Empire in the Gulf of Guinea to try to give, from this peculiar historical trajectory, a new spin on the concept of transition, or rather transformation, from slavery to post-slavery forms of unfree labour. The first labour contract in the Spanish colonial island of Fernando Pó, sitting off the coast of Nigeria and Cameroon, was brought over i…

Touts and Despots: Recruiting Assemblages of Contract Labour in Fernando Po and the Gulf of Guinea, 1858–1979
This dissertation follows Fernando Pó’s labour recruiters wherever they went— between the 1860s and 1920s recruiters traversed the entirety of the Gulf of Guinea and enlisted mostly Kru from Liberia and Fang from Rio Muni, Cameroon and Gabon; between the 1930s to 1960s they gathered particularly around the Bight of Biafra and brought an unprecedented number of contract workers into the island’s booming cacao plantations, mostly Igbos and Ibibios …

Dash-peonage: The contradictions of debt bondage in the colonial plantations of Fernando Pó
Dashin pidgin English means an ancillary gift to an exchange. What happened when thedashbecame attached to the indentured labour contracts that the Spanish Empire brought from Cuba to their last colony, Spanish Guinea? On the island of Fernando Pó, which came to be almost wholly populated by Nigerian labour migrants, the conditional gift in the form of a large wage advance produced a particularly intense contradiction. Panya: Economies of Deception and the Discontinuities of Indentured Labour Recruitment and the Slave Trade, Nigeria and Fernando Pó, 1890s–1940s
In the first half of the twentieth century, most of Fernando Pó’s contract workers came from societies in southeastern Nigeria which had been heavily impacted by the transatlantic and internal slave trades. These contract workers were recruited by a new generation of labor recruiters, dispatched covertly by Spanish imperial employers, through a form of kidnapping known as panya. Panya was the largest labor smuggling and trafficking network in col…

Clandestine Recruitment Networks in the Bight of Biafra: Fernando Pó's Answer to the Labour Question, 1926-1945
The "Labour Question", a well-known obsession pervading the archives of Africa, was posed by colonial rulers as a calculated question of scarcity and coercion. On the Spanish plantation island of Fernando Pó the shortage and coercive recruitment of labour was particularly intense. This article examines two distinct clandestine labour recruitment operations that took hold of Rio Muni and eastern Nigeria, on the east and the north of the Bight of B…
