  • I didn’t realise the variety of people that are climbers’

    Open Access•Jack Ryan Hewitt, Nollaig Mcevilly•ARTICLE•Leisure Studies•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 48

This paper focuses on the increasingly popular leisure pursuit of indoor rock climbing amongst young women in the UK. Adopting a Bourdieusian perspective, we draw on the concepts of field, habitus and capital to explore the factors associated with young women’s propensities to start, and continue, engaging in this activity. Data were generated through semi-structured interviews with 12 women (aged 18–25), who had been regularly engaging in indoor…

  • What is PE and who should teach it? Undergraduate PE students’ views and experiences of the outsourcing of PE in the UK

    Open Access•Nollaig Mcevilly•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 12

This paper investigates beginning BSc Physical Education (PE) students' views and experiences of the outsourcing of PE in the UK. Outsourcing involves the provision of PE by external providers such as sports coaches. PE in the UK (and other neoliberal Western contexts) is a site in which outsourcing has become increasingly normalised. I anticipated that, as first year undergraduates, the participants would have relatively recent experience of out…

  • ‘No pain, no gain’

Ruby Tynan, Nollaig Mcevilly•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2017

This paper investigates former elite female gymnasts’ views and experiences of pain and injury. The purpose of the study was to examine how participants engaged with pain and injury discourses and interrogate the ways in which certain knowledge and practices had become dominant. A Foucaultian theoretical framework underpinned the study, making use of Foucault’s work on discourses, power and resistance. Data were generated through semi-structured …

  • Developing children

Nollaig Mcevilly, Matthew Atencio et al.•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2015•References: 13

This paper reports on one aspect of a study that investigated the place and meaning of ‘physical education’ to practitioners and children at three preschool settings in Scotland. We employed a poststructural type of discourse analysis to examine the developmental discourses the 14 participating practitioners drew on when talking about ‘physical education’ at preschools, during semi-structured interviews. Three main discourses around the notion of…

This paper provides an analysis of the discourses associated with physical education in Scotland's Curriculum for Excellence. We implement a poststructural perspective in order to identify the discourses that underpin the physical education sections of the Curriculum for Excellence ‘health and well-being’ documentation. Discourses related to physical activity and health are particularly prominent, along with a related concern with motor skill dev…

  • Investigating the place and meaning of ‘physical education’ to preschool children

    Nollaig Mcevilly•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Preschool physical education has not been extensively researched. Furthermore, research in physical activity and physical education rarely seeks young children's perspectives. The current paper focuses on one aspect of a post-structural study concerned with investigating the place and meaning of ‘physical education’ to practitioners and children at three preschool contexts in Scotland. The paper details the research methods employed to investigat…

  • Understanding the rationale for preschool physical education

Nollaig Mcevilly, Matthew Atencio et al.•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 21

This paper provides an overview of selected academic research literature that underpins contemporary preschool physical education. We highlight and interrogate diverse rationales and beliefs that serve to influence and structure preschool physical education in various forms. We speculate as to how preschool practitioners and children might engage in specific practices relative to these discourses. Our consideration of preschool physical education…
