Deliberating at a Distance
INTRODUCTION: Alongside software developers, our community-academic partnership adapted an exercise designed for participatory priority setting to engage low-income community members in online deliberations about health and welfare spending priorities. This study evaluated the feasibility and quality of a fully virtual deliberative exercise using an adapted Choosing All Together (CHAT) tool among low-income community members. METHODS: Twenty-one …
Acting as causing change
The paper defends a version of the view that agency is a causal power, the “causing view.” After sketching the view, and explaining how it differs from its rivals, various challenges are assessed. A family of objections says that causing change is neither necessary nor sufficient for acting. The second challenge centers on an Aristotelian thesis about the relation between an action (A's opening a window) and the corresponding passion (the window'…
Locus of Control and the Acknowledgment of Effort
What individual characteristics predict inequality acceptance? Previous literature has focused on economic and sociological determinants of accepting inequalities. Here, we present experimental evidence of one individual correlate of inequality acceptance: the personality trait known as locus of control. In our study, inequality is induced experimentally through the exogenous assignment to one of two experimental treatments. In one treatment, ini…

What is killing people with hepatitis C virus infection? Analysis of a population-based cohort in Canada

Reasons for action, acting for reasons, and rationality
What kind of thing is a reason for action? What is it to act for a reason? And what is the connection between acting for a reason and rationality? There is controversy about the many issues raised by these questions. In this paper I shall answer the first question with a conception of practical reasons that I call ‘Factualism’, which says that all reasons are facts. I defend this conception against its main rival, Psychologism, which says that pr…
Barriers and Facilitators to Recruitment to a Culturally Based Dietary Intervention Among Urban Hispanic Breast Cancer Survivors
An unforgettable event
During the 1997-98 El Niño, Tumbes, Peru received 16 times the annual average rainfall. This study explores how Tumbes residents perceived the impact of the El Niño event on basic necessities, transport, health care, jobs and migration. Forty-five individuals from five rural communities, some of which were isolated from the rest of Tumbes during the event, participated in five focus groups; six of these individuals constructed nutrition diaries. …
The Explanation of Action
Motivation and Desires
Chapter 3 focuses on motivation in action with a view to answering the question what our reasons for action –what are called ‘motivating reasons’—are. After a discussion of motives, the focus moves to the relation between motivation and desires. It is argued that an adequate understanding of desires and of their relation to motivation is not possible without paying proper attention to the distinction between bodily appetites and rational desires,…
Beliefs and Motivating Reasons
Conclusion
The conclusion briefly draws together the main conclusions of the book and places them against the background of the questions that dominated action theory for decades after the publication of Davidson's paper ‘Actions, Reasons, and Causes’, namely, whether reasons are causes and whether reason explanations are causal explanations. It is suggested that the questions have often been debated in terms which are muddled due to the lack of nuance in u…
Reasons
The first chapter prepares the ground, and the conceptual tools, for an exploration of reasons in contexts of human agency, by exploring reasons broadly. It examines the normative and explanatory force of reasons. It argues that reasons have normative force in so far as they make acting, wanting, or believing something right or appropriate; and that, in the case of believing, the rightness or appropriateness concerns the concept of truth; while i…
Reasons, Kinds, Ontology
This chapter examines various kinds of reasons. It classifies reasons into three kinds: justifying, motivating, and explanatory, on account of the three main roles that reasons can play outlined in the previous chapter. It emphasizes the importance of keeping apart the motivating and explanatory roles of reasons, because conflating them has led to a number of mistakes and confused arguments. It further argues that, since this classification is ro…
Desires and Motivating Reasons
This chapter examines and rejects the idea that desires are motivating reasons, whether we focus on bodily appetites or on rational desires, and whether we think of a desire as what is desired, or as our desiring something. It is argued that what is desired is a goal or purpose for the sake of which someone acts, which can also be the intention in acting, and the starting point in practical reasoning. Thus, what is desired can motivate us to act—…
Reasons for Action and Practical Reasoning
This paper seeks a better understanding of the elements of practical reasoning: premises and conclusion. It argues that the premises of practical reasoning do not normally include statements such as ‘I want to φ’; that the reasoning in practical reasoning is the same as in theoretical reasoning and that what makes it practical is, first, that the point of the relevant reasoning is given by the goal that the reasoner seeks to realize by means of t…
HCV co-infection in HIV positive population in British Columbia, Canada
The ability to link BC public health and laboratory HIV and HCV information provided a unique opportunity to explore demographic and risk factors associated with HIV/HCV co-infection. Over half of persons with HIV infection who were tested for HCV were anti-HCV positive; half of these had HCV diagnosed first with HIV identification a median 3.5 years later. This highlights the importance of public health follow-up and harm reduction measures for …
HIV Counseling and Testing Among Hispanics at CDC-Funded Sites in the United States, 2007
Objectives. We sought to determine whether Hispanic–White HIV testing disparities exist and to identify characteristics associated with newly diagnosed HIV among Hispanics. Methods. We used 2007 HIV Counseling and Testing System data to compare test-level records of Hispanics and non-Hispanic Whites, and we conducted a multivariate logistic regression analysis to identify characteristics associated with newly diagnosed HIV. Results. Relative to W…
Kinds of Reasons
Understanding human beings & their distinctive rational & volitional capacities requires a clear account of such things as reasons, desires, emotions, & motives, & how they combine to produce & explain human behaviour. Maria Alvarez presents a fresh & incisive study of these concepts, centred on reasons & their role in human agency
Efficacy of an HIV/STI Prevention Intervention for Black Men Who Have Sex with Men
Issues in Formative Measurement
I
This is a book whose aim, argumentative structure and central claims are as clear as they could possibly be. Its aim is to provide an account of the meaning of the first‐person term I, as well as its ‘formal variants, like me, mine, and my’, where ‘“the meaning” of an expression stands here for its logical character, inferential role, referential function, expressive use, and communicative role’ (p. 2). The book is divided into two parts. The fir…

Illicit crops now account for half the annual deforestation of Colombia. Eradication has added to the damage, both by moving illegal production to previously uncultivated areas and through the toxic effects of the substances used for eradication
