The confidence-competence paradox
This study examines a critical phenomenon in Australian higher education: the disconnect between university leaders’ self-reported confidence and experience in Indigenous contexts. Drawing on data from a national survey and in-depth interviews with 41 university executives, we identify a confidence-competence paradox in which leaders express high confidence in engaging with Indigenous peoples and communities despite limited direct experience. In …
Patriarchy in a Postdigital Era
As traditional news platforms—such as newspapers—have long served as sites for the reproduction of gendered discourses, the digital space appears to be no different. Although we might expect digital platforms to challenge or transform these entrenched narratives, after long decades of feminist activities, transformation is not always consistent, visible, or long-lasting. In this article, we analyse the portrayal of women in Australian domestic vi…
Building radical hope in an imagined world
We present the emerging concept of Creative Critical Collective Futuring (3CF) as a theory and method to co-imagine more radically hopeful, racially-just futures in the year 2056. Focusing on two workshop activities with university students, we acknowledge how the past, present, and future are intertwined, and that by asserting felt, bodily knowledges, we can then begin to imagine new, collective futures. Our work also revealed how a racially-jus…
Decoloniality – Implications for Rethinking Social Justice
Despite growing calls to advance social justice and address deep-seated inequities and gaps, injustice and oppression continue to be perpetrated in contemporary society. This article attempts to review and understand social justice issues and contribute to discussions to addressing the violence of ongoing colonialism. Given the many meanings and conceptualisations of social justice, this review seeks to find out how concepts of decoloniality can …
Activism as a long durée journey
In this paper, I use the idea of purposes of education, particularly subjectification, and the concept of love to explore long‐term teacher activism in Chile. ‘Long‐term activism’ is used to describe an ongoing struggle rather than activism confined to specific moments. There has been extensive research on how Chilean student activism has challenged extreme forms of neoliberal education policies. However, little research has explored the ongoing …
Southern influences upon and development of the pedagogic device
Although the pedagogic device is viewed as a crucial element within the sociology of education, little research explores its historical development. This paper explores some iterations of the pedagogic device over the last 40 years, focusing on its origins in South America. By exploring Bernstein's ideas of the pedagogic device and pedagogic rights alongside Freire's understanding of activism, this paper demonstrates a dual purpose for the pedago…
The Kickstart Drama project
This paper focuses on a group of young people in Singapore connected by the love for their communities and their desire to use drama for social change. In particular, we investigate how a participatory arts-based approach can enable young people to reflect on the importance of solidarity. We draw on Freire’s pedagogy of solidarity, arguing for the importance of ‘small’ acts of solidarity that foreground the experiences of systematically excluded …
Teacher activism
While much has been written about student movements against the neoliberal privatisation of education in Chile, less attention has been given to teacher activism around similar educational matters. In this article, we contribute to the field of teacher activism as a social movement to resist the global education reforms of neoliberal education policies/practices. Data for the study were generated through yarning, photo-yarning and testimonios, me…
Challenges for Teachers Working in Mainstream Schools with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students in Chile
Recently, Chile has experienced a significant increase in linguistically and culturally diverse immigrants from Haiti. However, little is known about how Chilean teachers cope with this issue. Using Haworth's (2009) model of contextual layers of teachers' work as a conceptual lens, this article reports the findings from two case studies. Findings show that participants often struggled to teach their culturally and linguistically diverse students.…
