The stability of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule‐2 in children aged 14–36 months with elevated likelihood for autism
BACKGROUND: This study investigated the stability of Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) classifications in a cohort of 304 siblings at elevated likelihood for autism (EL-siblings). METHODS: ADOS-2 assessments were conducted at 14, 24 and 36 months, with Clinical Best Estimate (CBE) autism diagnoses determined at 36 months. RESULTS: Our findings indicate that while some children have stable ADOS-2 classifications from …
Uh and um in autism
English-speaking autistic children use the hesitation marker um less often than non-autistic children but use uh at a similar rate. It is unclear why this is the case. We employed a sample of Dutch-speaking children from the Preschool Brain Imaging and Behavior Project to examine hesitation markers in autistic and non-autistic preschoolers with the aim to 1) make a crosslinguistic comparison of hesitation marker usage and 2) examine hypotheses re…
Exploring cascading effects of sensory processing on language skills and social‐communicative difficulties through play in young children at elevated likelihood for autism
This study investigated the association between Sensory processing (SP) (i.e., hyporesponsiveness, Sensory Seeking (SS) and hyperresponsiveness) at 10 months (M) and language/social‐communicative difficulties at 24M, mediated through object play at 14M in young children at elevated likelihood for autism (EL). Parent‐report instruments were used to measure all variables in younger siblings of children with autism (siblings, n = 74) and children bo…
Age-related differences in temporal discounting of different types of reward
Validation of the Language ENvironment Analysis (Lena) system for Dutch
The validity of the Language ENvironment Analysis (LENA) System was evaluated for Dutch. 216 5-min samples (six samples per age per child) were selected from daylong recordings at 5, 10 and 14 months of age of native Dutch-speaking younger siblings of children with autism spectrum disorder ( N = 6) and of typically developing children ( N = 6). Two native Dutch-speaking coders counted the amount of adult words (AWC), child vocalisations (CVC) and…
Perceptions of parents of the impact of autism spectrum disorder on their quality of life and correlates
Extremely Preterm Born Children at Very High Risk for Developing Autism Spectrum Disorder
Disadvantageous Decision-Making as a Predictor of Drop-Out among Cocaine-Dependent Individuals in Long-Term Residential Treatment
Our findings suggest that neurocognitive rehabilitation of disadvantageous decision-making may have clinical benefits in CDI admitted to long-term residential treatment programs

Measuring Empathic Tendencies
The Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI; Davis, 1980) is a commonly used self-report instrument designed to assess empathic tendencies. The IRI consists of four separate subscales: Perspective Taking (PT), Fantasy (FS), Empathic Concern (EC), and Personal Distress (PD). The objective of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of a Dutch version of the IRI. The IRI was administered to a Dutch sample of 651 normal functioning adults. …
Activity in children with ADHD during waiting situations in the classroom
Background. According to the optimal stimulation theory and the delay aversion hypothesis, children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience difficulties when they are confronted with low levels of stimulation and delay, respectively. Aim. This study investigated the activity level of children with ADHD during waiting situations in the classroom. Three series of hypothesis were made: (1) with respect to the comparison betwe…
Cognitive skills in mathematical problem solving in Grade 3
Background. Research on the relationship between cognitive skills and mathematical problem solving is usually conducted on adults or on participants with acquired deficits associated with brain injury (e.g. Cipolotti, 1995; Cohen, Dehaene, & Verstichel, 1994; McCloskey, 1992).Aims. In these studies we wanted to make a contribution to the field of children's mathematical problem solving. The first aim of this study was to investigate whether mathe…
Dealing with Relational Conflict
Although behavioral research has provided important insights into the relational features of conflict, it leaves open the whole field of conflict-related processes that are unavailable for self-report or behavioral observation. The information-processing paradigm offers a useful approach to the study of these important and unexplored aspects of relational conflict. The present article describes a first attempt to `translate' and test some of the …
