  • Associations Between Sociosexuality and Intoxicated Sex and Unprotected Sex

Alice Masterson, James B Moran et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2026

BACKGROUND: Sociosexuality reflects behaviors, attitudes, and desires related to casual sex with multiple, concurrent, novel partners. Research on whether people high in sociosexuality are less likely to engage in safer sex practices (e.g., unprotected sex) is mixed, but there is evidence that those high in sociosexuality consume more alcohol than their peers, and drinking is associated with less likelihood of engaging in safer sex. Here we teste…

  • Sexual Activity and Sexual Well-Being Among Sober Adults

James B Moran, Alice Masterson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sexual…•2025

Objectives: To explore the relationship between experiences of stigma and sexual activity and sexual well-being among sober individuals. Methods: Two-hundred and thirty-eight sexually active, sober adults reported on their sobriety length, experiences of sobriety stigma, sexual activity, and sexual well-being. Results: Sobriety length was not related to either outcome. However, sobriety stigma was negatively related to sexual activity and sexual …

  • The Relationship Between Men’s Sociosexuality, Drinking Intake, and Blackouts

James B Moran, Weijun Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2024

Background: Sociosexuality—attitudes, behaviors, and desires related to casual sex—partly predicts drinking behavior in both men and women because drinking is thought to facilitate interactions that lead to casual sex. It follows that sociosexuality would predict drinking intake (e.g., quantity consumed)—but perhaps not drinking consequences (e.g., blacking out)—on the premise that drinking large quantities with high frequency (but not to such hi…

  • Repercussions of Rejecting Unwanted Advances

    James B Moran, Rebecca L Burch•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sexual…•2023

Here we investigated how a history of experiencing unwanted advances—both sexual and romantic—impact a person’s stress and strategies when rejecting future advances. In this study (N = 465; 71% women), women reported experiencing unwanted advances earlier in life compared to men, and these women were more likely to have greater worry over such advances. Additionally, women tended to worry more than men about the repercussions of rejecting these a…

  • Sex on the Screen

Open Access•Danica Kulibert, James B Moran et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Investigation…•2021

Viewing online pornography is common among US adults, with mixed-sex threesome (MST) videos being one of the top 10 most popular categories of pornography for both men and women. The current content analysis applied sexual script theory to understand the themes present in these mixed-sex threesome videos. Independent coders viewed a total of 50 videos (25 MMF and 25 FFM) at each timepoint (2012, 2015, 2020) and coded for different sexual behavior…

How does disease threat influence sexual attitudes and behaviors? Although research on the influence of disease threat on social behavior has grown considerably, the relationship between perceived disease threat and sexual attitudes remains unclear. The current preregistered study (analyzed N = 510), investigated how experimental reminders of disease threat influence attitudes and anticipated future behaviors pertaining to short-term sexual relat…
