Patterns of risk for diabetic retinopathy in the Mumbai slums
Diabetes onset precedes diabetic retinopathy (DR) by 5–10 years, but many people with diabetes remain free of this microvascular complication. Our aim was to identify risk factors for DR progression in a unique and diverse population, the slums of Mumbai. We performed a nested case-control study of 1163 diabetics over 40 years of age from slums in 18 wards of Mumbai. Data was collected on 33 variables and assessed for association with DR using bo…

Barriers and facilitators of micronutrient supplementation among non-pregnant women of reproductive age in Johannesburg, South Africa
The prevalence of anaemia among South African women of reproductive age (WRA) remains high at 39%. Multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) may be an effective strategy in the prevention and management of anaemia. Our aim was to understand facilitators and barriers to preconception MMS adherence and to explore perceptions and beliefs of MMS in the prevention and treatment of anaemia among non-pregnant WRA. This qualitative study was embedded …

Trajectories of vital status parameters and risk of mortality among acute organophosphorus poisoning patients – a latent class growth analysis
The trajectories of systolic blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate and partial-oxygen pressure were significantly associated with an increased risk of mortality among OP poisoning patients
Individual, social and environmental determinants of smokeless tobacco and betel quid use amongst adolescents of Karachi
In conclusion, students studying in co-education, parents and peers use, lack of knowledge based sessions on harmful health effects of SLT and/or BQ, and easy availability of the product from hawkers outside school all contribute towards enhanced risk of SLT and/or BQ use in adolescents
